Two-phase international public competition

to design a Market Fountain on Chemnitz Market Square

Launch of an art competition to desin a fountain for Chemnitz market square

Our vision for the Market Fountain is a public place where people enjoy meeting and interacting, a point of attraction in the city centre which encourages visitors to linger. We set designers the challenging task of staging the magical effect of water as a fluid and moving element within the static built environment of the square.

The Market Fountain should be captivating, striking and unique. And of course we are hoping to see designs which draw upon the industrial and architectural heritage of Chemnitz. The contemporary designs should negotiate the tension between past and present, and thereby foster an identity in keeping with the idea of the “City of Modernity”.

A budget of € 450,000 is available for the realisation of the fountain design.
