Christmas in Chemnitz

When the scent of scented candles and roasted almonds mingles with the clinking of mulled wine glasses, and the children can’t decide between a spin on the carousel and tucking into red Christmas apples, then it’s Christmas in Chemnitz. The city centre is filled with lovingly illuminated wooden huts from which traders offer their wares.

Even outside the Christmas market, there are plenty of cultural Christmas activities on offer – from theatre and ballet performances to craft workshops throughout the city.

The Christmas market offers a daily entertaining programme for its guests on the stage at the Neumarkt, the Erzgebirgsdorf and the entire area.

On Düsseldorfer Platz, 20 lovingly decorated stalls are arranged around the 20-metre-high, walk-in pyramid. It is the centrepiece of the Erzgebirge village and also offers seating in case of bad weather. In the children’s baking workshop, young bakers can let off steam – subject to prior booking – and there will also be live music to enjoy.

"Wichtel Village" on Innere Klosterstraße

For the first time, the festively illuminated ‘Wichtel Village’ invites visitors to take a stroll down Innere Klosterstraße. Two two-storey market stalls at the start and end of the market flank rustic, brightly lit stalls made of solid wood. A special feature is an integrated slide at one of the stalls. The ‘Wichtel-Village’ also offers a daily programme of stage performances and craft afternoons for children. Another new attraction is the illuminated display cases with moving figures in Börnichsgasse.

Since 2005, the historic market known as the “Klosterweihnacht”, organised by Bibow Communications GmbH, has been a firm fixture in the Chemnitz Christmas Market programme. This year, the Klosterweihnacht will take place for the first time on Jakobikirchplatz, extending as far as Innere Klosterstraße 4, featuring 19 historically themed stalls. Also returning this year: a bakery and tavern, a leatherworker and much more …

Mountain parade

"Good luck! Good luck! - the miner is coming" ... This is how it sounds through Chemnitz city centre every year when the mining parade rings in the Christmas season in the Ore Mountains on the eve of the first Advent. Around 1000 people in uniform and mining musicians form an impressive procession through the city centre.
