There are
- 78 municipal childcare centres – including nine branch centres,
- 76 privately run centres – including ten branch centres – as well as
- 56 childminders, including one childminder affiliated with the AWO
.
Parents are free to choose whether to have their child looked after at a childcare centre run by the City of Chemnitz, by an independent provider, or by a childminder until the child reaches the age of three.
When registering, parents may specify several facilities. (Multiple choices permitted, up to five facilities)
Every child has a legal right to a childcare place. However, for various reasons, it is not always possible to accommodate a specific preference for a particular facility. The criteria given the highest priority are the date of application, the transition from the Rembrandtstraße childminding service/nursery to the next stage of childcare, and siblings.
Four weeks after submitting their application, parents will receive a binding statement regarding the prospects of securing the requested childcare place for their child.
The previous time limit for confirmation (six months before the preferred start date) by the centre management has been removed in order to secure a place for parents at an early stage.
Note: After-school care centres are also classified as childcare facilities.

Looking for a daycare centre place at the click of a mouse? This is possible with the online occupancy management system "Kita-Portal".
All of Chemnitz's daycare centres and daycare centres run by local authorities and independent providers can be found here. From the comfort of their own home, parents can find, select and register at the daycare centre that suits them and their child. Enrolment is possible after the birth of the child.
Registration of the child for a childcare place:
- with the application form at the Youth Welfare Office:
- in the Kita-Portal or
- directly at the daycare centre
Registration can only take place after the birth of the child.
Registering a future schoolchild for an after-school care place:
Applications for an after-school care place must be submitted in good time (no later than the start of the summer holidays in the year the child starts school):
- with the management of the chosen after-school care centre in the school catchment area – for an overview
- via the childcare portal or
- on Amt24.de (formerly the Service Portal)

Legislation
The federal legal basis for child daycare under public responsibility is the Eighth Social Code (SGB VIII).
The Saxon law is based on the Saxon Daycare Centre Act (SächsKitaG).
Parental contributions
Parental contributions are charged for the use of a place in a childcare centre. These are calculated in accordance with the current regulations of the City of Chemnitz on the levying of parental contributions. The fees apply uniformly to all facilities, whether run by the local authority or private providers, as well as to home-based childcare. The tiered parental fees for the first and second child, as well as for any further children, are a sign of Chemnitz’s family-friendly policy.
Coverage of parents’ contributions
Parental contributions may be refunded in part or in full. The calculation is based on the family’s income situation. The Finance, Administration and Child and Youth Support Department at the Youth Welfare Office is responsible for providing advice on submitting applications and for processing them.
Transition from nursery to school
The transition from daycare centre to primary school is a big step. Entering this new phase of life is not only awaited with curiosity and excitement by future school starters. It is also exciting for parents to see how their children will cope with the transition.
To provide comprehensive information, the Youth Welfare Office publishes the annual brochure "My child is starting school". Parents can obtain the guide from their child's day care centre.

Child day care
The education, upbringing and care of the child by a childminder is equivalent to care in a day care centre. Childminders look after up to five children in their own home or in rented accommodation.
The Kita-Portal provides an overview of whether there is a childminder near your home. Registration for the waiting list can be done online in the Kita-Portal in the same way as for a place in a daycare centre.
People who would like to take on this job can obtain information from the youth welfare office about the necessary documents, funding opportunities and the requirements for working as a childminder.
