Work begins on the upgrade of Mittelbacher Straße between the industrial estate and Aktienstraße

Work will take place whilst the road is completely closed from 3 August until mid-December 2026

From Monday 3 August, major civil engineering works will begin on Mittelbacher Straße in the Grüna district. Following the completion of the broadband network installation work currently underway, Mittelbacher Straße is therefore expected to remain fully closed to private vehicles between the industrial estate/Wiesenbach and Aktienstraße until mid-December 2026.

The construction work is being carried out as a coordinated project by the City of Chemnitz’s Waste Management Authority (ESC), eins energie in sachsen (eins) and the City of Chemnitz’s Transport and Civil Engineering Office. Following the re-laying of the combined sewer using open-cut construction on behalf of the ESC, the City of Chemnitz is having the heavily worn asphalt surface renewed over a length of around 300 metres and is constructing an approx. two-metre-wide footpath between the districts of Grüna and Mittelbach to ensure safe pedestrian access. The energy supplier eins is installing a modern lighting system.

Through traffic will be diverted via Hofer Straße (B173), Neefestraße and An der Wiesenmühle. The Mittelbach industrial estate is accessible exclusively from the B173. The Grüna industrial estate and the asphalt mixing plant can still be accessed from Neefestraße as before.

During the works, pedestrians will be able to cross the construction site safely via temporary routes. Affected property owners and residents will be informed in writing about access restrictions and changes to waste collection. Temporary arrangements have been made for the emergency services and the fire brigade.

The construction costs for the entire project amount to around 785,000 euros. The City of Chemnitz’s contribution towards the road and pavement works amounts to around 560,000 euros, financed from the city’s own funds. The ESC is investing around 195,000 euros (re-laying of the combined sewer) and eins/inetz is contributing 30,000 euros (lighting).

The contract for the infrastructure renewal has been awarded to Chemnitzer Verkehrsbau GmbH, based in Chemnitz.
