Summer in full swing: outdoor swimming pools open

The outdoor swimming pools at Bernsdorf, Gablenz, Einsiedel and Wittgensdorf are open daily until 6 pm during the early season – and may stay open longer depending on the weather and staffing levels. The Rabenstein reservoir is open until 8 pm in fine weather.

From 17 to 19 September, the ‘Light our Vision’ light art festival – now known as ‘LOV SpotLIGHT’ – will be shining a spotlight on more than just the former Hotel Kongress. Under the motto: LIGHT.MAKES.A.MARK., the city centre will once again be transformed into an open-air stage at key locations and buildings.

Lifesavers honoured

When smoke began to rise from a care home on Salzstraße on the afternoon of 12 March, a group of young people did not hesitate for a moment. They have now been awarded the Free State’s Life-Saving Medal in recognition of their efforts to tackle the fire.

New flamingo chicks at the zoo

Ten chicks can currently be seen amongst the greater flamingos at Chemnitz Zoo. This marks a new breeding record for the zoo and, at the same time, the fifth consecutive successful flamingo breeding since 2022.

Water extraction prohibited

With immediate effect, it is prohibited to extract water from surface water bodies within the city of Chemnitz for personal use (by owners, residents and for public use) using technical equipment, such as pumps, pipes or hoses, or by hand-held containers. This applies up to and including 31 October 2026.

Primary school enrolment now available online

For the first time, primary school enrolment will also be available online from 1 August. Parents of children starting school in the 2027/2028 academic year can enrol their child online or continue to attend the in-person enrolment sessions at Chemnitz’s primary schools.

Emergency decision by the Lord Mayor

To safeguard the operations of the Chemnitz Integrated Regional Control Centre (IRLS Chemnitz), Mayor Sven Schulze made an urgent decision on 30 July 2026. This will provide the IRLS Chemnitz with unscheduled funding for the necessary modernisation of its control centre technology.

Zentrumsring: New construction phases begin

Since 20 July, new sections of the Zentrumsring construction project for the Chemnitz Model (Phase 4: Chemnitz–Limbach-Oberfrohna railway line) have been underway:

Following extensive preparatory work for the construction of the new bridge and the track triangle, the first phase of bridge construction is now underway at Falkeplatz. Meanwhile, on Mühlenstraße, between Brückenstraße and the Stadtbad, work has been completed and the construction site has moved on to Theaterstraße Nord, between Brückenstraße and Hartmannstraße.
