Chemnitz railway arch

With the official opening of the Chemnitz viaduct, the Chemnitz railway arch has also been completed.

On 8 September 2024, Open Monument Day, the Mayor of Chemnitz Michael Stötzer, Saxony's Transport Minister Martin Dulig and representatives of Deutsche Bahn officially put the Chemnitz railway arch back into operation with a ceremony. Although the trains on the railway arch never stood still, all the construction work has now been completed.

The modernisation of the Chemnitz railway arch, which stretches from Augustusburger Straße to the Chemnitz Mitte stop, began in 2019. Deutsche Bahn has renewed the track systems, signals and overhead lines and made the Chemnitz Mitte and Chemnitz Süd stops barrier-free. In addition, four bridges along the almost three-kilometre-long line were renewed. The city of Chemnitz rebuilt the road overpass on Zschopauer Straße.

The last section of the railway infrastructure in Chemnitz that has not yet been renewed has been brought up to current standards. The approximately 2.8 kilometre long section stretches between Augustusburger Straße and the Chemnitz Mitte stop and is also known as the Chemnitz railway curve due to the route.

The entire track system was renewed. In addition, the Chemnitz Süd and Chemnitz Mitte stops were made barrier-free and better connected to the local public transport network. In addition, four existing bridges on the section of line were replaced with new structures. A plan amendment procedure was carried out for the Chemnitz viaduct. The Federal Railway Authority (EBA) issued the building permit in December 2020.

  • The Chemnitz railway arch project is part of the overallSachsen-Franken-Magistrale project. The Sachsen-Franken-Magistrale runs from Leipzig/Dresden via Werdau to Hof and is currently being modernised in sections. In the area of the Chemnitz railway curve, the track systems, all signals and the overhead line are being renewed. In addition, new retaining walls are being built and noise barriers erected along around 1.9 kilometres.
  • The existing Chemnitz Mitte stop will be dismantled and rebuilt on Stollberger Straße. The new location of the transport station will significantly improve the connection to local public transport (tram/bus). The Chemnitz Mitte and Chemnitz Süd stops will also be equipped with lifts, making them barrier-free in future.
  • In addition, the four existing railway overpasses (EÜ) "Augustusburger Straße", "Bernsdorfer Straße", "Reichenhainer Straße" and "Stollberger Straße" are to be rebuilt as reinforced concrete bridges. The "Reichsstraße" level crossing will be dismantled and the resulting gap filled in, as it will no longer be required for road traffic in the future. The "Zschopauer Straße" flyover will be rebuilt by the city of Chemnitz. A plan amendment procedure was carried out for the Chemnitz viaduct.
  • Following completion of the Chemnitz railway arch, the modernisation of the Saxony-Franconia main line between Leipzig/Dresden and Hof is largely complete. For travellers, the upgrading of the line means a noticeable improvement: among other things, the journey time from Dresden to Hof will be reduced by one hour to around two and a half hours.
