Today, Thursday, the city of Chemnitz received 2.3 million euros from the Free State of Saxony for the further ecological development of the Pleißenbach stream in the Altendorf district. Mayor Thomas Kütter received the corresponding funding notification from the President of the State Directorate of Saxony, Béla Bélafi. The funding comes from the watercourse/flood protection funding guideline of the Free State of Saxony.
This will provide further support for the near-natural development of the Pleißenbach stream, which the city of Chemnitz has already been promoting for several years along the intervention area for the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025.
Specifically, the money will go towards construction phase 2.1, which comprises the approximately 200 metre-long section from Am Stadtgut street towards Rudolf-Krahl-Straße. As in the other construction phases, the Pleißenbach will be transformed into a near-natural watercourse by removing riverbed and bank reinforcements as well as other obstructions and extensively modelling the terrain. The redesigned, natural course of the watercourse with shallow, grassed banks and typical local trees and shrubs not only serves to protect and preserve the flora and fauna, but also to protect against flooding. In addition, the measure also creates a significantly higher quality of stay for the people of Chemnitz. By swapping areas, the course of the stream will be widened in the expansion area and flood protection for neighbouring properties will be significantly improved. As a result, the section will fulfil the requirements of the European Water Framework Directive in future.
Together with the renaturalisation of the Pleißenbach stream, the new Am Stadtgut bridge will also be built as part of the construction project. The total costs of construction phase 2.1 currently amount to 3.3 million euros. As a precautionary measure, a larger item has been included for the disposal of contaminated sites. The pro rata costs for the ecological reorganisation of the section of the stream, including this extensive disposal of contaminated sites, amount to around 2.6 million euros.
Background
The overall "Pleißenbachgrünzug" project is being realised as part of "Stadt am Fluss" (City on the River) as an important intervention area of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. The site of the former Altendorf goods station between Beyerstrasse and Rudolf-Krahl-Strasse was long characterised by fallow land, succession and an ecologically disadvantaged, heavily built-up natural area. Following the withdrawal of the railway, the opportunity arose to create a new part of the city with open spaces for public use as well as additional areas for housing, community use and commerce - including flood protection.
The project is divided into nine construction phases, six of which have already been completed. In the meantime, around 900 metres of near-natural stream sections, a new foot and cycle bridge and an attractive park with a large playground have been created. The Küchwald-Wüstenbrand premium cycle path also runs through the green corridor, most of which has been completed in this area and construction is currently continuing on the Röhrsdorfer Straße - Riedstraße section. This cycle path, which is independent of other traffic and largely free of crossroads, has created and will continue to create a safe and attractive centre-west connection for cyclists.
A total of around 12.9 million euros has already been invested in the development of the Pleißenbach green corridor.
