At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council decided to renovate the Bräuteich pond in Wittgensdorf. The aim is to sustainably restore the historic pond, improve the water quality and make an important contribution to nature conservation and climate protection. The costs for the measure amount to a total of 1.3 million euros, of which 1.04 million euros come from the "Natural climate protection in municipalities" funding programme. This corresponds to a funding rate of 80 per cent.
The Bräuteich is part of a public park and has been part of the regional cultural landscape for centuries - maps dating back to 1788 show it. In recent years, however, there have been repeated reports of deficiencies, particularly with regard to the water quality and the structural condition of the banks, outlet and dam. The origin of the water supply was also unclear for a long time.
Based on extensive preliminary investigations, the pond is now being comprehensively renovated. Plans include renewing the outlet, desilting, restoring the banks and dam and removing the artificial island. Overall, the watercourse is to be renaturalised and the shore areas designed to promote biodiversity. This includes shallower bank zones, new planting, refuge areas for animals and near-natural seating to protect the vegetation. A neighbouring former pasture area to the south will also be included in the planning.
The construction work in the waterway is limited in time for nature conservation reasons and is scheduled to begin in autumn 2026. The construction work is scheduled for completion in 2027, with the overall measure, including the maintenance phase, expected to end in 2029.
