At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council adopted the new statutes for school transport, which form the legal basis for processing and deciding on applications for school transport services and will be more closely aligned with the provisions of school legislation in future.
In concrete terms, this means that in future only attendance at the nearest or most conveniently located school of the corresponding school type will be funded. This is based on the Saxon School Act, according to which the obligation to provide transport only applies to the nearest school of the chosen school type that is eligible for admission. Daily journeys to independent schools will only take place to a limited extent according to the above-mentioned criterion. A cost saving of 755,000 euros per financial year is expected.
As after-school care attendance is not part of the timetabled lessons and therefore financing the journey home from after-school care is not compulsory, school transport will also be limited to one or two journeys per day as well as so-called block or pick-up times. This has been practised successfully for many years at almost all special schools.
The personal contribution to the education ticket will also be adjusted, as it can now be used for a period of twelve months, meaning that the previous personal contribution will be increased from 150 euros to 180 euros (from ten to twelve months).
In addition, specific definitions have been added regarding the journey to school, the nearest school and the reasonable waiting time after the end of timetabled lessons, which for primary schools and special schools up to year 4 is a maximum of 45 minutes per school day, for years 5 to 10 a maximum of 90 minutes per school day and from year 11 a maximum of 120 minutes per school day.
