Being active together in the countryside

More "MoKo-Fit" exercise groups for people aged 65 and over from the end of September

From the end of September, new "Moko-Fit" exercise groups will start in other parts of the city for people aged 65 and over. "Moko-Fit" is a motor-cognitive exercise concept that combines exercises to promote physical and mental performance. The aim of the "MoKo-Fit" project, which is being carried out by scientists at Chemnitz University of Technology, is to train physical and mental fitness and thus promote personal health.
As many Chemnitz residents aged 65 and over as possible should be able to benefit from the free, age-appropriate and local outdoor exercise programme.

The new groups meet at the following times:

South city area:

From 24 September, the group will meet every Tuesday and Thursday at the Markersdorfer Oase (under the tent roof):

Group 1:

from 9 to 10 a.m.

Group 2:

from 10.30 to 11.30 a.m.

City centre-west area:

From 26 September, every Tuesday and Thursday:

Group 1:

from 9.30 to 10.30 a.m. at the Holzkirche (Ahornstraße 47)

Group 2:

from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the park in front of the Schlosskirche (park entrance Salzstraße 59)

The groups with around 15 participants aged 65 and over are supervised by licensed exercise instructors for 16 weeks. Exercise mentors then take over the supervision of the groups.

Scientific monitoring of the project shows that the participants are better able to walk longer distances and have more strength in their legs. Mental performance has also improved, for example memory and concentration. Last but not least, being together in a group, being close to home and exercising in the fresh air have contributed to the participants continuing to maintain the exercise groups even after the project has ended. They are now supervised by trained mentors and continue to meet regularly every week.

Since 2022, exercise groups with participants aged 65+ have been meeting regularly in various districts of Chemnitz in parks and green spaces to take part in the free sports and exercise programme.
The project has been in its second phase since April. Further exercise groups are currently being developed in the districts of Chemnitz South (Kappel, Hutholz, Morgenleite, Markersdorf, Helbersdorf) and Chemnitz Centre-West (Schloßchemnitz, Kaßberg, Altendorf).
So far, such exercise groups have been formed in the neighbourhoods of Helbersdorf, Siegmar and Gablenz as part of the project.
Over the course of the project, the other six neighbourhoods will gradually be included.

This measure is co-financed with tax revenue on the basis of the budget approved by the Saxon state parliament.
