Opening of the exhibition "Stamps" & "Pillows" by Joerg Waehner

Stempel" & "Kissen" marks the beginning of a series of events that brings together artistic works, personal memories and historical documents to open up new perspectives on surveillance, contradiction and everyday life in the GDR. The interplay of art, contemporary history and individual experience creates a space for reflection on forms of control, self-assertion and social change - then and now.
You are cordially invited to the opening of the exhibition "Stamps" & "Pillows".
The exhibition shows an extraordinary love story, documented and commented on by the Ministry for State Security of the GDR. At the centre are surveillance photos coloured by the artist, supplemented by selected documents and materials that reveal the unusual connection between private closeness and state surveillance. A short "opening chat", music and catering await you at the opening.

A gentle path to mindfulness - course

Mindfulness is the art of living in the present and has been proven to have very positive effects on body and mind. However, for many people, classic mindfulness exercises are not effective as they are too confrontational and only create new pressure. In this course, you will learn a gentle, body-orientated and friendly way that will help you to be more mindful and present in your everyday life, step by step. You will learn what you can do to relieve your nervous system. You will also receive tips and tricks for dealing with stress in a relaxed manner.

Guided tour of the Hoheneck Memorial - excursion

The tour and the discussion with contemporary witnesses introduce the history of the former Hoheneck prison and shed light on political criminal justice in the GDR. The prison is synonymous with around 24,000 women, some of whom were imprisoned there for political reasons. The guided tour provides basic information on the history of the building, the lives of the prisoners, the significance of this place in German history and the political background. We invite you to get to know the memorial, which opened in summer 2024.

Artificial intelligence in education. Current digital-ethical issues - online lecture

The lecture will focus on current digital-ethical issues regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly in relation to education. Based on the main areas of application of AI, digital-ethical challenges and approaches to solutions, also at a political level, will be presented. The EU AI Act as the European Union's AI regulation is less the centre of debate here.
Selected projects and initiatives round off the basic overview. In addition, opportunities and risks for a holistic development of digital skills will be outlined.

What is conservatism? - Lecture and discussion

The term "conservatism" is difficult to define; it is usually associated with feelings rather than knowledge. This is detrimental to rational political discourse. In any case, there is no such thing as "the" conservatism, but rather many varieties of it.
The lecture and discussion will trace the history of the term "conservatism" from ancient Rome and China to the French Revolution and the present day. There are profound differences between continental European conservatism, especially in its manifestation as "liberal conservatism", and Anglo-Saxon conservatism, which sees itself as strictly "anti-liberal". We invite you to combine historical and current perspectives.

In negotiations, disputes or presentations, there are recurring processes that you should know in order to achieve your desired result. Get to know the techniques used by communication professionals, such as questioning techniques, body language, rhetoric for short presentations and how to deal with difficult dialogue partners.

Finding your own great form means moulding the unmistakable and tracing the essential. - That which remains when everything superfluous falls away from the surface. It is the powerful expression of a clear gesture, the great line that carries the whole. Reduction becomes strength. The free artistic realisation of what we have seen and closely observed leads us to new solutions that create space for movement, rhythm and expression. In the alienation, transformation and reorganisation of everyday objects, exciting pictorial spaces are created that go beyond the expected and dissolve boundaries or clearly mark them.
Central aspects of the course are composition, materiality and the relationship between surface and form. Using large-format used and painted (wrapping) paper, we develop our own concepts of form in which the material itself becomes the medium of expression. You will work on medium and small formats and learn more from the artist Ines Hildur about working with chalk and stone powder, liquid wax and collage. Everything can be tried out, combined and reinterpreted. The course offers space for free, experimental work and the development of your own creative expression.

"The re-enactment after stellen" - a parcours

"Nachstellen nach stellen" invites you to a special city tour with the artist Joerg Waehner. The guided tour leads to historical sites of Stasi surveillance and contemporary events in the city centre. Using selected stations, Waehner links the observation practices of the time with today's forms of visibility, control and public space. The event offers a reflective look at the past and present - in the centre of the urban environment.

Dealing with dissidents: Construction soldiers in the GDR - lecture and discussion

Research on dissidents enables a deeper understanding of the limited scope for action and the behaviour of individuals and groups in a dictatorship. The historian PD Dr Anke Silomon has investigated this using the example of the construction soldiers who refused to serve with weapons in the National People's Army (NVA) and who were deployed in their compulsory service to build military facilities, among other things. They paid a high price for their refusal to serve.
Many of them were only called up at the last possible moment, at the age of almost 25. They often already had a job and a family. Many of them were separated from their wives and children. Some of them were unable to continue their studies or return to their jobs. They felt the consequences of their refusal to comply with the system.
The construction soldiers are an example of how the GDR regime achieved the opposite of what it wanted with its extremely repressive policy towards dissenters. Did the construction soldiers themselves create an opposition?
