Information on election day
The election to the 21st German Bundestag will take place on Sunday, 23 February 2025.
Around 190,000 Chemnitz residents are called upon to cast their votes to help decide the future composition of the Bundestag.
The election lasts from 8 am to 6 pm.
Immediately after the polling stations close, the electoral boards will determine the election results in the electoral districts from 6.00 pm.
The 61 postal ballot boards will also meet on election day to carry out the admission check and determine the postal ballot results at 3.00 p.m.

The electoral area of the Bundestag election is the Federal Republic of Germany. The electoral area is divided into 299 constituencies. The city of Chemnitz forms constituency 161 - Chemnitz.
The city is divided into 129 general constituencies for the organisation of voting in the ballot box election. A separate polling station has been designated for each polling district.
The electoral notifications that every eligible voter received between 13 January 2025 and 2 February 2025 specify the electoral district and the polling station in which the voter can vote.
Unless they have obtained a polling card from the City of Chemnitz, voters may only vote in the polling station of the electoral district in whose electoral roll they are entered. This is the polling station that can also be found on the polling card.

Every person entitled to vote may only exercise their right to vote once and only in person. It is not possible to vote by proxy.
Eligible voters who are unable to read or who are unable to cast their vote due to a disability may use the assistance of another person to cast their vote. The assistant must be aged 16 or over.
Assistance is limited to technical assistance in expressing a voting decision made and expressed by the person entitled to vote. Assistance is not permitted if it is provided under improper influence, if it replaces or changes the self-determined decision of the person entitled to vote or if there is a conflict of interest on the part of the assistant. The assistant is obliged to maintain the confidentiality of any knowledge of another person's election that he or she has obtained in the course of providing assistance.
For blind and visually impaired voters, the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired provides voting templates free of charge on request in the run-up to the election. The voting process on election day in the polling stations and the subsequent determination and declaration of the election result in the electoral district are open to the public. Everyone has access to the extent that this is possible without interfering with or disrupting the election process
Voting takes place using officially produced ballot papers.
The ballot papers for the Bundestag election are white in colour.

Determination of results and presentation
The public presentation of the provisional election results of the Bundestag election will take place in Chemnitz City Hall on the evening of the election.
As in previous elections, interested citizens, media representatives and party representatives will be able to follow the election results from the 190 Chemnitz electoral districts and postal ballot boards live on a large projection screen from 18:00. Admission begins at 17:00.
At the same time, the provisional election results will be published on the City of Chemnitz website at www.chemnitz.de.

Every voter votes on 23 February at the polling station assigned to him or her. The exact address can be found on the polling card. A symbolic reference to the accessibility of the polling station can be found on the polling card.
You can vote by post before 23 February, either by post or at the postal voting office at BVZ I-Moritzhof, Bahnhofstraße 53. You will find the opening hours printed on your election notification. To receive the ballot papers, you must first apply for a postal vote. This can be done using the application form on the back of your polling card by 3.00 pm on 21 February 2025.
Please note: It is important that your election letter is returned to Moritzhof by 6.00 pm on election Sunday. If this is too short by post, you can also post your letter in the deadline letterbox at the town hall or at the community centre on the Wall by 6.00 pm on election Sunday.
What do I need to bring to the polling station on 23 February?
Don't forget! At the polling station, every voter needs their polling card and identity card or passport. Anyone who presents their polling card or identity card will receive a ballot paper. The election is secret - that's why you vote in a booth. Anyone who needs help - e.g. because they are visually impaired or otherwise disabled - can be assisted by the polling assistants or a companion. This person may then also go into the polling booth with you. Blind and visually impaired voters can also obtain a so-called voting template from the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired in the run-up to the election and use this in the polling booth. In Bundestag elections, every voter has two votes, a first vote and a second vote. The first vote is cast in favour of a specific constituency candidate. The second vote is cast in favour of a party list. This vote also determines the distribution of seats between the parties in the new Bundestag. The so-called proportional representation system applies here, i.e. the 630 seats in the Bundestag are divided between the parties in proportion to the second votes cast.

Please note: Postal voting documents from spouses, parents or others cannot be handed in at the polling station. They must be handed in at the BVZ I-Moritzhof, Bahnhofstraße 53 by 18:00 on election day or posted in a deadline letterbox.
The top right-hand corner was cut off as standard when the ballot papers were produced. It helps blind or visually impaired citizens to insert the ballot paper correctly into the ballot paper template.
The district electoral committee for the Bundestag election will meet on 3 March 2025, 10:00 a.m., at Chemnitz City Hall, Markt 1, Room 118 for a public meeting to determine and establish the final results of the Bundestag election in constituency 161 - Chemnitz. The meeting is open to the public and anyone may attend.
