Street furniture: Prototypes from ideas competition presented
With the provision of a city centre fund for 2021 and 2022, the City of Chemnitz's Department of Economic Affairs & Digitalisation is planning a series of measures to revitalise our city centre. In order to increase the quality of stay and length of stay in our city centre, additional street furniture in combination with greenery elements is planned.
To this end, various models were developed in a joint ideas competition with regional artist groups, some of which are now to be realised. In a joint decision-making process with the building department, artists and city centre stakeholders, the "Chemnitz Executive Chair" and a larger seating island in the form of the Chemnitz city layout are to be completed by spring 2022 and invite visitors to linger in the area of the market and Neumarkt.
The "Street art meets creative street furniture" project was originally created for the bid to become European Capital of Culture 2025. The armchair is one of several concepts developed by the "Freundwerk" team. Among other things, this prototype was created to assess the design and production costs.
All pieces of furniture are unique in their own way and relate to our city. On the way to the Capital of Culture year, further designs by the respective artists will also be used throughout the city.
