Vettersstrasse site opens
Handover of the site to future users on 13 September, 1 pm, Vettersstraße 34
On Friday, 13 September, at 1 pm September at 1 p.m., the Vettersstraße area, one of 30 intervention areas of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025, will be handed over for use in the presence of Mayor Michael Stötzer and the Chemnitz-Mitte citizens' platform at Vettersstraße 34 in Bernsdorf.
Afterwards, there will be a colourful programme of fun and games for everyone until 4 pm.
The once wildly overgrown green space not far from Marianne-Brandt-Oberschule and the socio-cultural centre Subbotnik has been transformed into a new event and cultural area, a so-called public square. The area includes seating crossbars and seating cubes, a table tennis table, bicycle stands, barrier-free access to the sports field, a pathway to the Subbotnik e. V. club building and a barbecue area.
Subbotnik e. V. also intends to build a sculptural stage on the site, which has already been prepared for such structures.
The multifunctional event site has been given a park-like character. There is plenty of space, e.g. for urban gardening, experiential education projects and cultural events.
There are also plans to plant 24 trees in the autumn, depending on the weather. The species selection consists of winter lime, Norway maple, red maple, bird cherry, weeping cherry and old apple tree varieties. A wildflower meadow has also been created.
The work was carried out by iproplan Planungsgesellschaft mbH, Techno-Farm und Service GmbH and KommunalBau Chemnitz GmbH (KBC).
Background:
The public squares are the result of intensive participation by people in the city's neighbourhoods and localities. The stakeholders from the city's neighbourhoods have put a lot of thought into the project and, together with their citizens, have selected a public space that is to be redesigned as part of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025.
Each of the eight areas of the citizens' platforms and each of the eight incorporated localities will receive a maximum of 325,000 euros. For example, a pavilion in Küchwald, a rest area on the Chemnitz Valley cycle path, the Lohse-Uhlig-Steig - a themed circular hiking trail around the village of Kleinolbersdorf-Altenhain - and a lift at Wittgensdorf primary school, which has created a barrier-free event space in the assembly hall.
The public squares are one of the 30 intervention areas of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. They are the city of Chemnitz's urban development project for the Capital of Culture, which now involves an investment of over 60 million euros.
