Redesign of the railway viaduct area begins

Work to redesign the entrance to the city park at the Annaberger Straße/Reichsstraße railway viaduct will begin on Monday, 16 December. The area is part of the "Intervention Areas" urban development programme of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 and the construction work is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2025.

After Deutsche Bahn AG handed over the construction site facilities and storage areas to the City of Chemnitz in November, preparations for the redesign of the eastern section of the site, which is bordered by Reichsstraße and the Chemnitz River, began this week. Initially, the construction site will be set up and the area where a tyre dealership used to be located will be cordoned off.

In 2025, the area will be landscaped and planted with hedges and six new trees. The hedges serve as a boundary to Reichstrasse and the viaduct, which is surrounded by a five-metre-wide escape route. The footpath that currently runs along Beckerstrasse and Reichsstrasse will be removed and run through the redesigned area in future, so that passers-by will be guided directly through the upgraded areas.

A paved area with multifunctional use will be created at the centre of the new design. Adjacent to this, a seating sculpture will be erected, which will be made from part of the removed old main girder of the viaduct. In addition, the Chemnitzer Künstlerbund e.V. is planning to create a new work of art on the theme of "City by the River" and integrate it into the area.

The water's edge strip along the Chemnitz river is subject to strict conditions due to flood protection. A surface of gravel turf will be laid here, which will serve as a passable path in the event of flooding.

The project is being financed by funds from the "Intervention areas" urban development programme of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. The construction work is being carried out by Steinbach & Richter GbR from Lichtenau/OT Ottendorf. Krüger Landschaftsarchitekten is supervising the construction work.

The total costs amount to around 228,000 euros.
