The future of our food
VHS@home: on 4 May, 7 to 8.30 pm - expert talk and discussion
On Tuesday, 4 May 2021, from 7 p.m. to 8.30 p.m., the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre is hosting an online lecture on sustainable food production and reforming the agricultural system. The focus will be on sustainable agriculture and responsible policies for agriculture and rural areas.

How can our food be produced in an environmentally friendly way? The current way in which we produce our food is criticised in many places: it destroys the environment and the climate, violates animal welfare, restricts family farms and destroys the food trade. Reform approaches want to link agricultural subsidies to environmental, climate and animal welfare requirements. It is also about intact villages, species-rich fields and fair producer prices. For many years, scientists, environmental organisations and audit offices have been struggling to make agriculture sustainable and suitable for grandchildren.
The speaker, Ingrid Apel, a trained farmer and agricultural economist, is involved in all aspects of food and agriculture. She was an expert at the Federal Environment Agency and advises the Humboldt University in Berlin on the EU research project "Edible City". Her approach to the discussion is: "We can do things differently because we know how. The basic principle behind the distribution of billions in land subsidies must change. Sustainable land use and the development of regional logistics for food products are important. Her recipes include a clear agricultural and nutritional concept on an ecological basis, necessary political reforms and behavioural changes in everyday life.
In the online event, the speaker will first debate with two other experts from the region. Afterwards, all interested parties are invited to take part in the discussion and contribute their own thoughts.
The event is a cooperation between the Saxon State Centre for Political Education and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre as part of the "Kontrovers vor Ort" project.
