Start of the holiday and travelling season

Checking the validity of identity documents

The Citizens' Office would like to remind you to check the validity of your identity cards and passports before the start of the summer holidays. It is not possible to extend the period of validity of identity documents. A new application is therefore necessary.

The following documents must be submitted: 1 photo 35 x 45 mm (suitable for biometrics) for each document, the previous identity document and the birth or marriage certificate (or family book if available). Please note that if the required documents cannot be presented, you will be required to make another appointment. The application must be made in person, as the identity of the applicant must be verified.

As the registration office is not authorised to provide binding information on the entry requirements of individual countries, every citizen should find out about the entry requirements and recognition of documents before travelling abroad, e.g. from the tour operator, embassies or the Federal Foreign Office(www.auswaertiges-amt.de), in order to avoid any inconvenience when crossing the border.

Please note that due to European regulations, children's entries in their parents' passports are no longer recognised for border crossings. This means that all children (from birth) must have their own identity document when travelling abroad. The parents' passports in which the child is registered remain valid without restriction. Which document must be applied for for the child depends primarily on the destination. Children's passports, passports or identity cards are possible. When applying, the child must be present for an identity check. A child's passport can only be issued for children up to the age of 12.

The following fees currently apply:

- ID card 28.80 euros (for applicants under 24 years 22.80 euros)

- Passport 59 euros (for applicants under 24 years 37.50 euros)

- Children's passport 13 euros (extension up to the age of 12 6 euros)

The fee must be paid at the time of application. Please allow approx. 3-4 weeks from the time of application to the completion of the documents. If necessary, an express passport can be applied for, which can be produced by the Bundesdruckerei within 3 working days. However, an increased fee of 91 euros (69.50 euros for applicants under 24 years of age) must be paid for this.

Current office hours of the registration office (Düsseldorfer Platz 1):

- Monday and Friday 08:30 to 12 noon

- Tuesday and Thursday 8.30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

- Saturday 9 am to 1 pm

Documents can also be applied for at the city's citizen service centres.
