From the end of March 2025, interested parties are invited to discover and discuss current topics in science and research. The new series of events entitled "Science up close" will initially start with four events.

To kick off the event, Barbara Ludwig will explore the question of how learning can be successfully organised. Under the title "What makes good learning. A historical review and an invitation to dialogue", she will look back at the founding of the Chemnitz School Model and discuss current changes.

For discussion: Japan as a laboratory for ageing societies
With Dr Dorothea Mladenova, Japanologist
The starting point for the lecture "For discussion: Japan as a laboratory for ageing societies" by Japanologist Dr Dorothea Mladenova is demographic change in Germany and Europe. As one of the oldest populations in the world, Japan is used as a comparison. The lecture explores the issues of care requirements, costs, innovations and ideas relating to social ageing in Japan and provides an insight into how this is dealt with there.

Time travel to the amber forest of Central Europe
With Michel Laaß, geologist
The geologist Michel Laaß takes a "Journey through time into the amber forest of Central Europe". He gives an insight into the primeval forests of Central Europe 40 to 50 million years ago. This is based, among other things, on inclusions of various organisms in Saxon amber as well as almost completely preserved prehistoric horses and other vertebrates from the Geiseltal near Merseburg. The lecture will provide background information and illustrate snapshots from that time using modern photographic technology.

Synthetic fuels made in Freiberg. Research into e-fuels
With Prof Dr Martin Gräbner from the TU Bergakademie Freiberg
In his lecture, Freiberg Professor of Energy Process Engineering Martin Gräbner will present recent research into the technology and development of e-fuels, which are generally understood to be synthetic fuels produced from water and carbon dioxide using electricity. The discussion centres on whether and in what way they are suitable as a replacement for conventional fuels - also in comparison to purely electric drives. In a demonstration plant in Freiberg, Saxony, e-fuels are produced from biogenic or renewable methanol.
