Sale of Fairtrade products at the Christmas market
Day of action on 6 December is opened by Lord Mayor Sven Schulze
On Wednesday, 6 December, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., personalities from Chemnitz will be selling Fairtrade products in the Vereinshütte at the Chemnitz Christmas market. Mayor Sven Schulze will kick things off from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, followed by Superintendent Frank Manneschmidt and the team from the adult education centre led by Grit Bochmann. In the afternoon, for example, the head of the music school Nancy Gibson and Prof Dr Marlen Gabriele Arnold from the Chair of Business Administration at Chemnitz University of Technology will be in the clubhouse, selling fair trade products from the Chemnitz Fair World Shop and at the same time soliciting donations.
Representatives of the media are also cordially invited to attend. The association hut is located on the left-hand side of the Rosenhof (in front of the Ferris wheel, hut number 118).
The event is organised by the Fairtrade Town steering group. Fairtrade products from the Chemnitz World Shop will be sold (especially chocolate, coffee and handicraft products). The sellers also call for donations for a good cause. At the end of the day, the person with the highest donation turnover during their sales period gets to decide which organisation(s) will receive the total donations from the campaign day.
Background
The Fairtrade City of Chemnitz uses regular campaigns to draw attention to fair trade. So-called sensitive products such as sports balls, chocolate, clothing, tropical fruit, gold or cut flowers are often produced and processed in countries of the global South under inhumane conditions. Fair trade helps to improve the living and working conditions of farmers and factory workers and to protect the local environment.
In the Fairtrade City of Chemnitz steering group, a wide range of committed people work together to organise themed events, consultations and campaigns. In exchanges with other Fairtrade cities, supra-regional formats for raising awareness of fairer trade are also planned. Chemnitz has been part of the global network of Fairtrade Towns since 2020.
