Safe journey to school in the new school year

Measures of the AG School Road Safety

Many pupils will be making their own way to school again next Monday. To ensure that they can do this safely, the City of Chemnitz Civil Engineering Department is working with the School Route Safety Working Group, which is made up of representatives from the traffic authority, the road constructionThe working group, which is made up of representatives from the traffic authority, the road construction authority, traffic planning, the Chemnitz police department, the education authority, Chemnitz transport companies, the public order office and the traffic watch organisation, is constantly working on suggestions and changes to eliminate potential danger spots and road defects.

The school route maps for primary schools and after-school centres have been updated and are now even more attractive and clearer for parents and pupils. The interactive illustration can be used here. By entering the parents' individual places of residence in Chemnitz or a specific school, very specific routes to school can be selected. Existing dangerous spots, crossing aids such as pedestrian crossings, central islands etc. are displayed as images at the click of a mouse and help parents to find the best and safest route to school for their child.

The following measures were implemented in the past school year:

A time-limited, restricted stopping ban and short-term parking spaces (so-called parent parking spaces) have improved safety on Rödelwaldstraße for the pupils of Klaffenbach primary school.

The construction of a central island on Yorckstraße at Albrechtstraße will also contribute to improving safety on the way to school.

An improvement in visibility when crossing the road was realised through the construction of footpath projections on Hans-Ziegler-Straße, Fürstenstraße/Kutusowstraße.

This year, pavement projections are also planned on Emil-Rosenow-Straße/Enzmannstraße, Agricolastraße/Kanzlerstraße and a centre island on Weststraße/Hohestraße.

Thanks to the active participation of parents in the questionnaires for primary schools on safe routes to school, it was possible to identify and implement many focal points for improving school route safety. The City of Chemnitz Civil Engineering Department's Safe Routes to School working group would like to thank everyone involved for their co-operation.

In order to further promote the exchange of information between the AG Schulwegsicherung and parents, the service centre can be used by calling 115 or sending an e-mail to schulwegsicherung(at)stadt-chemnitz.de.
