Safe journey to school in the new school year

Measures of the AG School Road Safety

The 2021/2022 school year begins on Monday, 6 September, and many pupils will be making their way to school independently again. To ensure that they can do this safely, the school route safety working group at the City of Chemnitz Civil Engineering Office is made up of representativesrepresentatives of the traffic authority, the road construction authority, the traffic planning department, the Chemnitz police department, the education authority, Chemnitz transport companies, the public order office and the traffic organisation are constantly working on suggestions and changes to eliminate potential danger spots and deficiencies in the road space.

This results in updated school route maps for the primary schools, which can be used by parents and pupils. Link: School route maps

After entering the place of residence or a school, parents or pupils can select very specific routes to school. Dangerous places, crossing aids such as pedestrian crossings, centre islands, etc. are displayed as images and help to find the best and safest route to school.

The following measures were implemented in the past school year:

  • In the area in front of Mittelbach primary school, safety on the way to school was improved for pupils by removing the over-signposting.
  • A speed limit of 30 km/h was temporarily imposed on Rudolf-Krahl-Straße/Berganger until the pedestrian crossing is installed.
  • Corresponding traffic signs were installed on Annaberger Straße and Auerswalder Straße in order to help improve safety on the way to school.

Upcoming measures:

  • The police department, the public order office and Verkehrswacht Chemnitz e.V. will carry out speed checks, stationary traffic checks and other measures at the start of the school year.
  • In the course of the 2021/2022 school year, a pedestrian crossing on Wartburgstraße and pavement projections on Heinrich-Bretschneider-Straße, Haydnstraße/Horststraße, Horststraße/Richard-Wagner-Straße, Lortzingstraße/Haydnstraße and Max-Türpe-Straße are planned.
  • Pedestrian crossings - also for school crossing safety - are planned at the following locations: Wolgograder Allee/Am Hochfeld, Einsiedler Hauptstraße at Wiesenufer, Rudolf-Krahl-Straße/Berganger, Weststraße at Michaelstraße, Hainstraße at Lessingstraße, Schönherrstraße 8, Fürstenstraße near the centre island of Würzburger Straße, Zwickauer Straße 426 and in Promenadenstraße between Erich-Schmidt-Straße and Arndtplatz.
