Safe journey to school in the new school year

Measures of the AG School Road Safety

The 2022/2023 school year begins on Monday, 29 August, and many pupils will be making their own way to school again. To ensure that they can do this safely, the school route safety working group at the City of Chemnitz's civil engineering office is made up of representativesrepresentatives of the traffic authority, the road construction authority, traffic planning, the Chemnitz police department, the education authority, the Chemnitz transport companies, the public order office and the traffic watch organisation are constantly working on suggestions and changes to eliminate potential danger spots and road defects.

This results in updated school route maps for the primary schools, which can be used by parents and pupils. Link: School route maps
After entering the place of residence or a school, parents or pupils can select very specific routes to school. Dangerous places, crossing aids such as pedestrian crossings, centre islands, etc. are displayed as images and help to find the best and safest route to school.

The following measures were implemented in the past school year:

  • Necessary crossing aids and better visibility were created on the route to Albert Einstein Primary School. To this end, new footpath projections and bicycle parking spaces were created and stationary traffic was reorganised.
  • At Reichenhain primary school, a one-way street regulation has been set up as a pilot project until 31 May 2023 to prevent risky turning manoeuvres by vehicles in the area of the school.
  • With the construction of a pedestrian crossing on Wolgograder Allee at Am Hochfeld, children can now cross the wide road more safely.
  • On Chemnitztalstraße/AS BAB 4, the green arrow at the traffic lights has been removed in favour of pedestrians.
  • Temporary school bus stops have been set up on Richard-Wagner-Straße for the Georg-Götz support centre and on Reichsstraße for the Friedrich-Fröbel-Schule (resolution BA-017/2022).
  • To make it easier to see pedestrians crossing the road, parking bans have been introduced in front of the pedestrian crossings on Carl-von-Ossietzky-Straße and stationary traffic has been reorganised on Richard-Wagner-Straße.
  • Footpath projections have been created on Lortzingstraße/Haydnstraße.


Upcoming measures:

  • On Heinrich-Bretschneider-Straße, a footpath projection will be created at the level of the pedestrian connection to the residential area. Further traffic regulations from the school route safety working group, e.g. for the installation of "Attention children!" signs indicating a school route, have already been issued.
  • A pedestrian crossing on Rudolf-Krahl-Straße/Berganger, the relocation of a recycling island at Luisenplatz and temporary speed restrictions, e.g. on Markersdorfer Straße, are also planned.
  • The Chemnitz police department, the City of Chemnitz public order office and the Chemnitz traffic watch organisation will increase their monitoring of moving and stationary traffic at the start of the school year.
