The pedestrian bridge at the end of Rößlerstraße over the Chemnitz to the city park had to be closed today for structural reasons.
The condition of the structure has deteriorated considerably over time. Damage to the supporting structure and the cross bracing was discovered during today's regular annual inspection.
However, the closure is not related to the causes of the collapse of the Carola Bridge in Dresden. This is a bridge with a different structural design and a completely different damage pattern.
The structure was built in 1964 and no longer meets the requirements for a pedestrian and cycle bridge. Its clear width is clearly too narrow and the two piers in the river restrict the flow cross-section of the Chemnitz.
There are no plans to renovate the existing structure. Subject to the city council's decision on the 2025/26 budget, the city of Chemnitz is planning to start preparing a new replacement structure with a larger clear width (3.50 m) this year in order to meet the current requirements for pedestrian and cycle bridges. The design planning for the new replacement is currently being finalised.
