At its meeting today, the City Council approved the subsequent utilisation concept for the former residual waste treatment plant (RABA) of the Chemnitz Waste Management Association (AWVC). The concept will be implemented under the leadership of the waste disposal and city cleaning company (ASR).
The decision paves the way for a highly efficient biowaste fermentation plant. This project ensures the proper utilisation of the city's organic waste and makes a contribution to the regional heat and energy transition.
Instead of dismantling the existing infrastructure of the former RABA at great expense, the opportunity for an intelligent transformation of the "Weißer Weg" site is being utilised.
Based on these decisions, the ASR will press ahead with the detailed planning for the integration of a biogas fermentation plant in the hall of the former RABA and create the necessary conditions. With an investment of around 20 million euros, the city of Chemnitz is strengthening Chemnitz as a business location and utilising Chemnitz's biowaste and green waste itself. The resulting biogas is to be processed into biomethane and fed into the natural gas capacity available at the site. With the planned plant, ASR is continuing the success story of this historically significant site. Where waste was previously deposited and treated until recently, a modern utilisation plant will be built in future that combines economic rationality and ecological responsibility. Commissioning of the plant is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2029 at the earliest.
