Planning steps decided for civil engineering measures in the coming year

At its meeting today, the City Council decided to initiate the necessary planning steps for the listed civil engineering measures in the following budget and to include the necessary funding in the budget. The realisation of the measures is subject to the availability of budget funds and subsidies.

Extension of Augustusburger Straße from no. 306 to Niederhermersdorfer Weg
The road is in a poor condition. It is therefore to be upgraded. The section of Augustusburger Straße described above is home to the youth hostel and the high ropes course. Both are used by children in particular. The path from the Walter-Klippel-Straße bus stop to the youth hostel also runs along the edge of the carriageway. For this reason, a footpath is to be created. The narrow carriageway width also makes the current maintenance costs very high. Planning is due to begin in April 2017. Construction will start in October 2019 and end in May 2021. The total cost of the project is two million euros. Funding of 50 per cent is being sought.

Redesign of the Neefestraße / Jagdschänkenstraße junction
The junction of the Neefestraße exit and Jagdschänkenstraße has been an accident blackspot for many years. The turning lane with the gradient and the acute-angled junction with Jagdschänkenstraße have led to an increasing number of accidents in the past. Even measures such as signposting and road markings did not have the desired effect. The accident commission, with external support from road safety experts from TU Dresden, has proposed converting the road into a roundabout as a solution to make it safer for traffic. To this end, the eastern ramp from Neefestraße is to be removed for vehicles. Traffic travelling in the direction of Neefestraße will be routed over the bridge to the existing western ramp into Reichenbrander Straße. Its junction with Jagdschänkenstrasse will be built as a small roundabout. This will ensure that all traffic flows are efficient and safe. A solution will be found for cycle traffic on the roundabout that will ensure that the two-way cycle path on the eastern ramp can continue to be used. The costs for this amount to 675,000 euros. Funding of 50 per cent is being sought. Planning is due to begin in March 2017. Construction is expected to start in June 2019 and end in December 2019.

Redesign of Carl-von-Ossietzky-Straße between Ernst-Enge-Straße and Hans-Ziegler-Straße
Centre islands are to be built on Carl-von-Ossietzky-Straße between Ernst-Enge-Straße and Hans-Ziegler-Straße for the safety of pedestrians. These are located at the level of the two pedestrian crossings. In these areas, there are an increasing number of accidents, some of which result in personal injury. The costs amount to 600,000 euros. Planning began in March 2017, construction began in June 2019 and was completed in December 2019.

Cycling facilities on Reichsstraße between Zwickauer and Stephanplatz with redesign of Stephanplatz
A safe connection from Zwickauer Straße to Kaßberg via Stephanplatz is to be created. This is included as a measure in the current cycle traffic concept. Stephanplatz is to be designed in such a way that a safe crossing for cyclists, pedestrians and vehicles is possible. Barrier-free bus stops will be set up on Stephanplatz for the future ring bus route. Planning is due to begin in March 2017. Construction is scheduled to begin in May 2019 and end in October 2019. The costs amount to 550,000 euros. Funding of 70 per cent is being sought.

Küchwald-Wüstenbrand cycle path
The cycle traffic concept for Chemnitz stipulates that the route of the disused Küchwald - Wüstenbrand railway line should be secured for the development of a cycle traffic axis and gradually expanded into an attractive and fast cycle traffic connection, including connections to the rest of the cycle traffic network. The former railway line not only offers favourable connections for everyday cycling, but is also important for tourism. After the upgrade, the Saxon city route between Rabenstein and the city limits will run here. Planning is due to begin in March 2017. According to the current preliminary plans, construction will start in April 2019 and is scheduled to be completed in October 2020. The costs amount to 4.4 million euros. Funding of 67 per cent is being sought.

Zwönitztal cycle path between the Reichenhain stop and Einsiedel railway station
Erfenschlager Straße and Einsiedler Hauptstraße are part of the current cycle traffic concept for Chemnitz. This axis represents an important connection between the districts of Altchemnitz, Bernsdorf and Reichenhain with Erfenschlag and Einsiedel. There are no suitable cycle traffic facilities on either road. The cycle traffic concept therefore envisages the construction of cycle paths as individual measures for Erfenschlager Straße between Gornauer Straße and Niederwaldstraße.

By creating a cycle path alongside the railway from the Reichenhain stop to Einsiedel railway station, existing side roads can also be used for cycling. This allows the length of the new cycle paths to be reduced.

Following the realisation of this cycle path route, suitable cycle traffic facilities from the Reichenhain stop to Annaberger Straße as well as a connection to Lengefelder Straße and Reichenhainer Straße or Gornauer Straße must be implemented.

The costs amount to 750,000 euros. Funding of 70 per cent is assumed. Planning will begin in April 2017 and construction is scheduled to start in April 2020 and end in November 2020.

Renewal of the bank retaining wall on the Wittgensdorfer Bach in the area of Obere Hauptstraße
The natural stone bank wall on the Wittgensdorfer Bach in the area of Obere Hauptstraße 47 to 55 needs to be renewed due to its insufficient stability. The visible part of the bank wall is bulging in the direction of the Wittgensdorfer Bach. A section has already had to be secured and closed this year. There is a bus stop in the area of the desolate bank wall. The traffic loads of the buses travelling to and from the site also have a negative impact on the stability of the bank retaining wall. The costs amount to 245,000 euros. Planning is due to begin next year. Construction should begin in March 2019 and be completed in June 2019.
