Pedestrian bridge at the former river bath in Altchemnitz completed
Invitation to the winter walk on 11 January, 1.30 pm
Another intervention area of the European Capital of Culture 2025 was completed today. The new public green space at the former riverside swimming pool at Schulstraße 60 in Altchemnitz, including the new pedestrian bridge, is now open for unrestricted use. The project is part of the "Stadt am Fluss" (City by the River) project, in which various watercourses in the city are to be brought back to life.
To mark the completion of this construction project, the Parks Department, in cooperation with the Chemnitz Süd & Chemnitz Mitte citizens' platforms, invites you to a winter walk between the districts of Altchemnitz and Markersdorf on Saturday, 11 January 2025 at 13:30. The meeting point is the new entrance to the bridge at Schulstraße 60.
The walk will focus on the history of the city park and former river pool, flood protection, water development, nature conservation, sport, recreation and the construction project as part of the Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025.
In January 2024, work began on the construction of the new pedestrian bridge over the Chemnitz. After almost exactly one year, this was completed together with the design of the outdoor area in time for the start of the Capital of Culture year. In compliance with the requirements of nature conservation, water law and monument protection, a public green space with a high quality of stay was designed, which creates new references to the Chemnitz river, the natural landscape and its history.
The new leisure and recreation area with the 61 metre long and 2.5 metre wide steel pedestrian bridge now connects the two districts of Altchemnitz and Markersdorf. Various recreational areas with different functions have been created on both sides of the river. On Schulstraße, a leisure area with outdoor fitness equipment, playable elements and a curved circular path was created next to the entrance square. On the side of the city park, individual seating elements and design accents based on the former river pool invite visitors to linger and relax. In addition, the Chemnitz was redesigned in this area by the state dam administration to create a natural environment and offer a special nature experience.
In addition to the planting of 42 trees and 415 shrubs, new path connections, equipment elements and design and information objects have been created and round off the design of the public green space at the former river baths.
Around 3,500 m² of lawn and meadow areas still need to be sown. Due to the weather, this will not be possible until the new year. Other minor remaining work will also be completed then.
The company Phönix-Bau GmbH from Aue-Bad Schlema was commissioned to carry out the construction work. The construction costs, including compensation measures, amount to approx. 2.5 million euros. Jäger und Bothe Ingenieure GmbH from Chemnitz were responsible for the planning and construction supervision of the pedestrian bridge, while Rehwaldt Landschafsarchitekten from Dresden were responsible for the planning and construction supervision of the open space. The total planning costs totalled around 380 thousand euros.
The project was financed with Capital of Culture funding from the federal and state governments.
