Pavement renewal on Parkstrasse has begun

Coordinated construction measures in the section from Beckerstrasse to Katharinenstrasse - full closure required from 1 August

This week, extensive civil engineering work began on Parkstrasse between Beckerstrasse and Katharinenstrasse, which will require a full road closure from Thursday, 1 August. Underground infrastructure and the carriageway will be renewed in two construction phases.

The first construction phase between Beckerstrasse and Herderstrasse should be completed by December 2024. This will be followed by the second construction phase from Herderstrasse to Katharinenstrasse. Local traffic will be diverted via Stollberger Straße, Goethestraße, Neefestraße and Hugo-Fuchs-Straße. Access to the nursing home "Am Goetheplatz" will be guaranteed from Herderstraße. Pedestrians will be guided safely past the construction sites during the work. Residents will be informed in writing by the construction company about other changes (such as waste disposal, recycling containers, access roads, car parks).

The work is being carried out as a coordinated construction project by the City of Chemnitz's waste disposal company (ESC), the utility company eins and the City of Chemnitz's traffic and civil engineering department: The ESC will renovate the dilapidated combined sewer between the inspection chambers at the Parkstrasse/Beckerstrasse and Katharinenstrasse junctions and renew the connecting pipes in the process. In addition to the sewer construction work, the utility company is also planning to renew the drinking water network. Between Beckerstrasse and Herderstrasse, the old pipework will be replaced with a new cast iron pipe (nominal diameter DN300). At the same time, the Parkstrasse/Herderstrasse ring closure will be realised on this approx. 150 metre long section. A second pipe (DN125) will be laid for this purpose. In the section between Herderstraße and Katharinenstraße, the old grey cast iron pipe is also to be replaced with a new PE pipe (DN125). On behalf of the supplier eins, it is also planned to extend the district heating network to Katharinenstraße. In addition, protective pipe crossings for medium and/or low-voltage lines will be laid in the underground construction area.

Once the pipework has been laid, the carriageway will be thoroughly repaired on behalf of the traffic and civil engineering department. The pavement is covered with patches, small potholes as well as longitudinal and transverse cracks, is uneven and in a poor overall condition, so that it needs to be repaired. In future, the carriageway will have a minimum width of 5.50 metres, so that parking will still be possible on both sides.

The existing pavements will remain largely unaffected by the construction work. Only the kerbs on the northern side will be moved towards the carriageway to give the trees more space and adjusted in the intersection areas mentioned.

Construction costs totalling around 1.32 million euros have been estimated for the entire project, of which around 429,000 euros are earmarked for road construction. Strabag AG Direktion Thüringen/ Westsachsen was commissioned with the work.
