Opening of Fraunhoferstraße between Technologie-Campus and Werner-Seelenbinder-Straße

Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig will open Fraunhofer Strasse between Technologie Campus and Werner-Seelenbinder-Strasse to traffic next Wednesday, 28 June at 11 am. The opening will take place in the area of the traffic lights/tram turning point.
Fraunhoferstrasse was extended by around 1.2 kilometres from the "Technologie-Campus" road and connected to Werner-Seelenbinder-Strasse with a roundabout.
This meant that Fraunhoferstraße (formerly Güterbahnhofstraße) was made continuous between Reichenhainer Straße and Werner-Seelenbinder-Straße. A direct connection to the Südring and the A72 motorway was created. The new road becomes part of the road core network and takes over the connecting functions of Reichenhainer Straße. This will relieve it of motor vehicle traffic, an essential basis for the implementation and operation of the Chemnitz model in Reichenhainer Straße and the square design on the campus.
With the extension of Fraunhoferstraße to Werner-Seelenbinder-Straße, the conditions have also been created to expand the existing technology campus by an area of around 22 hectares. In future, there will be very well-developed settlement areas for technology-orientated companies, as well as for Chemnitz University of Technology and other research institutions.
The new road was constructed in overall widths of between 16 and 20 metres. There are cycle lanes and footpaths on both sides along the entire length of the road. Longitudinal parking lanes were provided on both sides of one section. The carriageway width is 6.5 metres. The measure also included the level crossing of the Chemnitz Model route with traffic lights and a railway barrier. A retaining wall was built over a length of 167 metres in the area of the CVAG premises.
In the area of the planned campus extensions, Fraunhoferstrasse was equipped with all media such as sewerage, electricity, gas, drinking water/fire water, lighting and communications. The construction work was coordinated and carried out jointly by the City of Chemnitz's civil engineering department, eins energie and the waste disposal company.
In total, around 1.7 kilometres of sewers, 1.1 kilometres of drinking water pipes, 850 metres of gas pipes and 18 kilometres of cable routes for electricity, lighting, communication and traffic lights were laid as part of the road construction.
The construction work began on 19 October 2015. The total construction costs amount to around 4.5 million euros. The road construction was funded by the federal and state governments to the tune of 85 per cent as part of the joint task "Improvement of the regional economic structure".
The construction work was carried out by the bidding consortium Günter Hüttner (Chemnitz) / Max Bögl Stiftung (Elterlein).
