Occurrence of fire salamanders is being investigated

Monitoring until 2028 in the city of Chemnitz

The Environmental Agency of the City of Chemnitz is pleased to inform you that the Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND), Landesverband Sachsen e. V. is investigating the occurrence of the fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) and its larvae along selected watercourses in the city area of Chemnitz in the period from 2025 to 2028. The monitoring, which will also be carried out in the districts of Zwickau, Central Saxony and the Erzgebirgskreis during this period, is being conducted in accordance with the "Natural Heritage - Studies for the Documentation of Species and Habitat Types" funding guideline.

The aim of the project is to record the populations of this amphibian species, analyse their vitality and reproductive success and derive protective measures from this - in particular for the ecological enhancement of small watercourses.

For this reason, employees of BUND Landesverband Sachsen e. V. will collect data on habitat types of the Habitats Directive, the occurrence of fire salamanders in streams and water edge areas as well as in land habitats in the Grüna, Hilbersdorf and Chemnitz districts until 2028. Furthermore, they will determine the chemical-physical water quality and, in individual cases, carry out a macrozoobenthos determination on watercourses in the study area.

For this purpose, the employees will enter properties or drive on suitable paths during daylight hours (from 6 am to 10 pm). They are authorised to do so in accordance with the Saxon Nature Conservation Act (Section 37 (2) SächsNatSchG). Land in the open countryside or in the forest can also be entered during the night for nature conservation observations.

As landowners must be notified of this (Section 37 (2) SächsNatSchG), but this affects a large number of properties, notification is made in the form of a public announcement in the official gazette, issue 7, dated 12 February 2026.
