Mayoral election: 203,000 Chemnitz residents are eligible to vote

The 161 polling stations in Chemnitz will open at 8 a.m. sharp on Sunday. They are located in 72 buildings, including eleven volunteer fire brigade equipment centres. Thanks to their barrier-free facilities, the latter make it easier for physically impaired voters in particular to exercise their right to vote. This means that 64 accessible polling stations are available for the mayoral election.
1,800 volunteer electoral assistants in 161 electoral boards will ensure that everything runs smoothly in Chemnitz's polling stations.
On the evening of election Sunday, interested citizens can follow the election results in a live presentation in the town hall on the market square. In the city council chamber of the town hall (on the 2nd floor), the results from the 161 general Chemnitz electoral districts and the 20 postal voting districts for the mayoral election will be presented to the public on a large projection screen from 6 pm. A provisional election result is expected at around 8 pm.

How to vote? - On Sunday, eligible voters can cast their vote at the polling station on the electoral roll for which they are registered. The number and address of the polling station where the voter can cast their vote is printed on the polling card. There is also a symbol under the address of the polling station to indicate whether the polling station in question is accessible. The polling card must be taken to the polling station. You should also not forget your identity card or passport.
Eligible voters who have made use of the postal voting option or intend to do so must ensure that the ballot letter is received by the municipal returning officer by 18:00 on election day at the latest. Postal ballot letters cannot be handed in at the polling stations.
Voting slips and postal voting documents can still be applied for at the postal voting office in the town hall until Friday, 14 June 2013, 16:00.
The election will be held according to the principles of a majority vote. Every eligible voter has one vote on election Sunday.
In the mayoral election on 16 June, a candidate is only elected if he or she has received more than half of the valid votes cast. Otherwise, a new election will be held on 30 June 2013. The new election will be conducted according to the same principles as the election on 16 June 2013. In the new election, the candidate with the most votes is elected.
If a new election is held, eligible voters who have applied for postal voting documents for the election on 16 June 2013 will automatically receive postal voting documents for the election on 30 June 2013 at the address specified for this purpose. The postal voting office will be open again for new applications for the new election from 24 June at the town hall.
