A city changes its face.
Chemnitz, the important Saxon industrial metropolis, was severely affected by Allied bombing raids in the last months of the war in 1945. Eight square kilometres of the city centre and adjoining areas with buildings dating back several centuries were almost completely destroyed in the night of terror on 5 March alone; more than 2,000 lives were lost. Nevertheless, with great sacrifice on the part of the people of Chemnitz, the reconstruction of the city began in 1945, initially on a limited scale. However, there was a unique opportunity to redesign the cityscape according to plan. Based on the speaker's own notes, the lecture outlines the changes in planning and the transformation of the city centre with its buildings, streets and railway lines in eleven sections from 1946 to the present day.
