January lecture evening in the city archive
The next event in the "The City Archive Presents" series will take place on Wednesday, 15 January at 6 p.m. in the City Archive building (located at Aue 16, 09112 Chemnitz). The speaker will be Chemnitz art and church historian Dr Stefan Thiele with the lecture " ... der Stadt Bestes. Church reconstruction in Chemnitz between 1945 and 2013". Admission to the event is free.
The city archive will provide information on the lecture: At the end of the Second World War, churches in Chemnitz also lay in ruins or were badly damaged, but many residential buildings and, above all, the social structures in the parishes were destroyed. As far as the rebuilding of churches in Chemnitz/Karl-Marx-Stadt/Chemnitz was concerned, this process was not a straightforward one and was accompanied not least by differences within the church, e.g. over the layout of the parish districts. (For comparison: in Dresden, the Kreuzkirche had already been rebuilt as a city church in 1955). In Chemnitz, the ruins of St Nicholas' and St Luke's Churches were removed as early as 1947 and St James' Church was at least provisionally secured. When the castle church was rebuilt, the church had to make the compromise of not re-crowning the church tower with the original roof. The Kreuzkirche on the Kassberg, on the other hand, was restored to its original state. The restoration of St James' Church in the last decade represents a significant milestone.
