Handover of the funding decision for the cycling track at the Sportforum
The handover will take place in the presence of representatives of the cycling clubs CPSV and RSV, the Olympic training centre and junior athletes as well as junior athletes and national squads in the consultation room at the cycling track in the Sportforum, Reichenhainer Straße 154.
The 1st construction phase comprises the renovation work on the track cycling head. An analysis of the options showed that only partial demolition and reconstruction would fulfil the requirements for a safe parapet. The following work will be carried out: Dismantling of the railing, demolition of the upper part of the parapet (up to the joint), partial demolition in the lower part and in the area of the gutter, installation of reinforcement, grouting of existing cracks, professional renewal of the existing structural joints of all 4 to 4 metres. The second construction phase includes the renewal of the existing parapet, concreting the new parapet every 4 to 4.5 metres, installing a new railing, coating the new parapet on the railway side, applying the markings and renewing the drainage inlets.
The 2nd construction phase comprises the renewal of the carriageway.
The execution of the measures is timed so that the Olympic preparations of the athletes in the track cycling sprint can be guaranteed. Demolition work on the track cycling head will begin in September 2016. The entire construction project is expected to last until the second quarter of 2017.
The total costs amount to 1,390,240.54 euros, of which the federal and state governments will each provide 30% funding. The city's own funds amount to 556,096.54 euros.
The history:
The cycling track on the site of today's sports forum was put into operation in 1950. The basic structure of the facility with a 333 metre long track consists of rubble that was covered with concrete. Originally, the track was only designed for standing races and offered space for around 15,000 spectators at the time. At the time, this was a cement oval with enormous appeal for track cycling in Chemnitz.
However, extensive renovations were required in preparation for the staging of the standing world championships in 1960. This led to the decision to apply a second 10 cm thick layer of concrete to the existing track surface in order to eliminate further cracks. Standing races continued to be held in the following years, but the utilisation of the track and the spectator response became less and less. No fundamental renovation work was carried out on the facility. This applies in particular to the track and the trusses for the spectators. Most of the traverses are therefore still closed today due to their dilapidated condition.
After reunification, the track continued to be used by the Chemnitz Police Sports Club. However, there was an urgent need for action due to extensive concrete spalling and cracks on the running surface. With the necessary crack repair and subsequent epoxy resin coating in 2005/2006, the continued use of the facility was temporarily guaranteed.
In 2007, the carriageway was completely resurfaced. In 2010/11, part of the spectator crossbar at the start/finish was renewed.
In the meantime, in addition to the damage to the track wheelhead, damage to the carriageway has also become apparent, making renovation of this area unavoidable. Cracks have recently formed or widened on almost all segments of the track surface.
