Intercultural Weeks in Chemnitz: "Many Cultures - One Future"

Under the motto "Those who are open can experience more", the nationwide preparation team is calling for participation in the Intercultural Weeks 2013. In Chemnitz, the Intercultural Weeks are being held from 21 September to 6 October 2013 under the motto "Many Cultures - One Future".
Intercultural Weeks are an offer from and for all citizens living in Chemnitz, although the number of foreign citizens living in Chemnitz as at 31 December 2012 is comparatively low at 8,434.The foreigners living in Chemnitz come from over 120 countries, 5,122 of them (or around 60 per cent) have a European migration background. The comparatively small number of foreigners corresponds to just 3.5 per cent of the total population in Chemnitz. Of the 8,434 foreigners, 3,713 are women and 4,721 are men. Etelka Kobuß, the city's Commissioner for Foreigners: "How can this diversity, which is barely perceptible in our everyday lives but so important for the future of our city, be made visible and tangible, how can the sensitivity of the host society be further developed and openness towards migrants actively signalled? - The Intercultural Weeks offer an excellent opportunity to emphasise the otherwise relatively hidden image of a multicultural city as a place where cultures meet and to give this important topic the attention it deserves. I therefore cordially invite the people of Chemnitz not only to visit the Intercultural Weeks, but also to actively participate in shaping the programme."

For the grand opening on 21 September 2013, Chemnitz city centre will once again be transformed into a large and colourful bazaar, where you can find plenty of inspiration, a unique stage programme and culinary delights. According to Etelka Kobuß, the festival will also be the prelude to a major event: "The 4th world record attempt at line dancing will take place in Chemnitz from 20 to 22 September, and the programme for the opening of the Intercultural Weeks will of course also include this. The interesting flash mob and heraldic dance activities - organised and prepared by Ikarus Line Dance Chemnitz - will be a special joint highlight on the Neumarkt at Chemnitz Town Hall."
