Information on swimming in streams and rivers

The city's environmental agency recommends refraining from

Due to the rising temperatures, the Environmental Agency of the City of Chemnitz would like to point out that although bathing in natural waters is generally permitted as a public use, it is also associated with some dangers. Bathing in Chemnitz watercourses is always at your own risk and is not recommended.

The revitalisation of streams and rivers implemented as intervention areas of the Capital of Culture are fortunately increasingly being perceived as places to linger and enjoy leisure activities. In warm, summery weather, river bathing was also rediscovered during various activities in the Chemnitz.

In contrast to open-air swimming pools, rivers are not designated bathing waters. The water quality is not or only irregularly monitored with regard to chemical and microbiological parameters. In particular, the water quality does not generally meet the requirements for designated bathing waters. It is also not analysed with regard to microbial contamination. Especially at high temperatures, combined with very low discharges, the bacterial load can rise quickly and pose a health risk.

In an urbanised area such as the city, heavy rainfall events result in run-off from the combined sewer system, discharges of road water or run-off from agricultural land into these watercourses and can represent a significant hygienic burden. Health problems, e.g. skin rashes, can be the result. In some cases, the substances introduced are deposited and can come into contact with bathers even after the rain event.

In addition, streams and rivers can pose a serious risk of injury from sharp or sharp-edged objects, broken glass and other rubbish.
