On Thursday, 21 August at 10 a.m., Mayor Ralph Burghart will break ground for the two-storey extension to the Chemnitz Cooperation School, which will stand on stilts. This marks the start of the second of three construction phases at the Brauhausstraße 16 site.
Representatives of the media are invited to attend.
The new wing will extend the school by eight classrooms and four group rooms as well as stairwells and sanitary facilities with barrier-free toilets. The courtyard-side access is designed as barrier-free access with a lift, so that all floors of the new building and the existing building can be reached barrier-free from there. A 43 kWp photovoltaic system helps to cover a large part of the electricity requirements from renewable sources. Heating energy is provided by district heating in the existing building.
Due to its location in the floodplain of the Chemnitz River and its status as a cultural monument under ensemble protection (building and garden monument), the project on Brauhausstrasse is complex in terms of planning and execution. For example, the flood protection structure is being raised so as not to impair the storage space and water flow.
The project comprises a total of three construction phases. It began in October 2023 and is expected to last until August 2027. The first construction phase included the modernisation of the old building, including the outdoor facilities, while the second phase comprises the new extension. In the third phase, the outdoor facilities will be redesigned on the basis of a plan in keeping with the listed building. The old trees are particularly characteristic, and there will be a "green classroom" and a school garden. A multifunctional, covered recreation area will be created under the new extension.
The total costs amount to around 10.6 million euros. The Sächsische Aufbaubank approved funding totalling 5.3 million euros. The new extension was awarded in full to one contractor in an EU-wide, two-stage negotiated procedure, with Köster GmbH NL Chemnitz being awarded the contract.
Background:
The Kooperationsschule Chemnitz is a two-form entry state school for grades 1 to 10 with all-day facilities and after-school care, offering space for up to 560 pupils.
The original intention was to construct a new school building with a sports hall for the Chemnitz Cooperation School at the Planitzwiese site. The coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine resulted in unaffordable additional costs of several million euros compared to the original budget. In May 2023, the city council decided not to pursue the project at the Planitzwiese site and to upgrade the existing school site on Brauhausstrasse instead.
The ensemble of buildings was the second new school to be built in Chemnitz after the Second World War based on a design by Rudolf Weißer and was inaugurated in 1952. It is part of the Reitbahnstraße reconstruction area. The school complex in a moderate traditionalist style of the "National Tradition" of early GDR architecture consists of several interconnected two to three-storey buildings and generously designed open spaces. Including the outdoor facilities, it is a cultural monument.
