Applications for grants to support projects that remove barriers in public spaces can now be submitted once again. Applications for the coming year under the ‘Accessible Building Investment Programme – Favourite Places for Everyone’ can be submitted until 31 October 2026. In 2027, too, the City of Chemnitz wishes to help make everyday journeys more accessible for people with disabilities, thereby improving accessibility for everyone. To this end, the City of Chemnitz is opening the application process for the coming year even before the official announcement by the Free State of Saxony. However, decisions on the applications will be subject to the allocation of funds from the Saxon budget to the City of Chemnitz and the necessary committee meetings.
Being able to eat out at any restaurant, go to the cinema or theatre without restrictions, visit a museum or take part in sports at a club – this is not possible for everyone. Many facilities are not accessible to wheelchair users or people with walking difficulties. Nor are they often fully accessible to people with hearing or visual impairments, or those with learning difficulties.
That is why, in 2014, the Free State of Saxony launched its investment programme to remove barriers for people, under the slogan ‘Favourite places for everyone’. The aim is to make access easier for people with disabilities and to turn the places mentioned as examples into their favourite places.
From 2027, funding will be based on the Saxon Local Authority Flat-Rate Regulation (SächsKomPauschVO). The City of Chemnitz, together with a specialist committee, will decide which applications are eligible for funding from the budget provided by the Free State for projects in 2027.
Funding can be channelled into many areas of public life, such as culture, leisure, education and the hospitality sector, as well as the healthcare sector, including doctors’ surgeries, psychotherapy practices and pharmacies. In addition to charitable initiatives, clubs and associations, businesses that own or operate such facilities which are open to the public are also eligible.
For individual projects with total costs of up to 25,000 euros, up to 100 per cent of the costs can be reimbursed through the funding programme.
