Between mid-June and mid-July, you should refrain from mowing green areas within a radius of approx. 50 metres around ponds. The environmental office of the city of Chemnitz points this out. If mowing is necessary for agricultural reasons, for example, a check should be made in advance to see whether young frogs and toads are travelling in this area. In this way, an entire generation of amphibians may be protected.
In early summer, a fascinating but sensitive natural process takes place in many ponds: tiny tadpoles become frogs and toads within a few weeks. Once fully developed, thousands of young animals - mainly grass frogs and common toads - leave the water at once. This natural spectacle is also known as the "frog rain".
The animals gather near the banks in meadows and bushes to acclimatise to life on land. Lawnmowers and brushcutters in particular then pose a great danger to the young animals. The animals, which are only 1.5 to 3.5 centimetres in size, are caught and killed unnoticed by the equipment.
