Food and goods shortages - background, problems and opportunities

On Thursday, 1 December, from 7 to 8.30 p.m., the adult education centre invites interested parties to a lecture on the connections and developments in the scarcity of goods in the consumer sector. In a subsequent Q&A session, the speaker, Prof Dr Wanja Wellbrock, will discuss with the audience whether the current situation can also be an opportunity for greater sustainability. The event continues the series on raw material and supply security with the topic of food.

German consumers are used to being able to buy whatever they want whenever they want. Whether it's food, cars, electronics, cosmetics or clothing - everything that is desired and financially affordable for the individual is made available in abundance by local and online retailers. At least that's how it used to be. However, supply bottlenecks during the coronavirus pandemic have already shown that our economy does not seem to be prepared for all crises.
At first glance, problems arise because temporary weaknesses in international logistics become apparent. For example, relatively short-term solutions can be found for blocked container ships and the consequences of the war in Ukraine. In the long term, however, the question of the German economy's dependence on individual supplier countries such as China and the finite nature of natural resources such as wood (pulp) is becoming increasingly important. As a result, customers are being forced to rethink their demands for the constant availability of all goods.
Speaker Prof Dr Wanja Wellbrock would therefore not only like to give an overview of the context of the scarcity of goods and foreseeable developments, he would also like to discuss with the participants whether the current circumstances are developing into an opportunity for greater sustainability and consumer awareness.
Prof Dr Wanja Wellbrock holds the Chair of General Business Administration, in particular Procurement Management, at Heilbronn University. His research specialisms include sustainable procurement management, ways of increasing the efficiency of industrial production and procurement processes and international logistics.
