At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council decided that the City of Chemnitz will participate in the 2025/2026 call for projects for the federal programme "Renovation of Municipal Sports Facilities (SKS)". The aim is to further develop important sports facilities for the future with the support of the federal government, to modernise them in terms of energy efficiency and to sustainably improve the conditions of use for athletes, clubs and schools.
The City of Chemnitz is planning to submit the following five projects for funding:
- the conversion of a grass pitch into an artificial pitch at the Röhrsdorf sports centre,
- the renovation of the refrigeration system at the Jutta Müller Ice Sports Centre in Chemnitz,
- the renovation of the artificial turf pitch at the "Jahnbaude" sports ground,
- the refurbishment of the sports hall at Walter-Janka-Straße 37 and
- the complex refurbishment of the sports hall at Schloßteich.
By applying to the federal programme, the City of Chemnitz has the opportunity to receive investment funds for municipal sports facilities that are of particular sporting, social, ecological or regional importance. The City of Chemnitz assumes a recognised budgetary emergency and therefore expects a funding rate of up to 75 percent of the eligible costs.
The five projects represent the diversity of sport in the city of Chemnitz. They serve popular sport in all its facets - from active leisure activities to school and club sport to targeted support for children and young people - as well as performance-orientated training. Due to their high user numbers, the sports facilities are central anchor points both in the neighbourhoods and throughout the city. All of the sports facilities in question make an important contribution to social integration and the promotion of exercise in everyday life.
In addition to structural modernisation, all projects also pursue ecological goals. Plans include the use of modern LED lighting, energy-efficient technology, the utilisation of waste heat and measures to improve the energy efficiency of buildings.
In the case of artificial turf pitches, the current European requirements will be taken into account by avoiding the use of synthetic fillers.
In order to meet the deadlines of the federal programme, the project outlines have already been submitted on time and with a chance of success. This was subject to the city council's decision, which will now be submitted later. The prerequisite for a subsequent application is confirmation by the city council that the projects will be realised if funding is approved and that the municipal contribution is secured.
If the projects are selected by the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag, the City of Chemnitz will submit the complete funding applications. The implementation of the measures is planned for the years 2026 to 2029, depending on the respective project.
By participating in this federal programme, the City of Chemnitz aims to secure the sports infrastructure in the long term, create modern and accessible conditions and further strengthen the attractiveness of Chemnitz as a sports city.
