Fair trade products - in dialogue about marketing strategies
EU Office in the City Mayor's Office provides information on the seminar to mark European Local Democracy Week - Date: 18 and 19 October
The reason for the seminar is the European Week of Local Democracy. According to Katja Schneider from the city's EU office, Chemnitz would also like to build on the successful COMENIUS-Regio project "Participating Youth" by taking part in the week and help to establish the action week in the city in the future.
Representatives from the Polish twin city of Lodz and from Prague have also joined the participants in the seminar on marketing strategies for fair trade products - details of which can be found below. Here is the two-day programme in detail:
Thursday, 18 October
9a.m., Chemnitz Environmental Centre: presentation of the Environmental Centre's fair trade activities as part of Agenda 21 - speakers are Manfred Hastedt, Chemnitz Environmental Centre, and Britta Schmidt, Informationszentrum Weltladen e. V. - followed by a tour of the World Shop, Kaufhof food department and Chemnitz Tourist Information Centre at noon.
2 p.m., Bürgerzentrum Sonnenberg: Presentations by representatives from the twin city of Lodz and from Prague on legal principles and good practice examples - 2:10 p.m.: Slow Food as inspiration for gastronomy - speaker is Grzegorz Zielinski, "Piotrkowska Klub" Zielinski i Syn S. J.; 14:50: Czech campaign of fair towns, schools and churches - speaker is Jirí Silny, Predseda druzstva Fair & Bio, Awareness for Fairness; 15:30: "Local co-operation strengthens Fair Trade" - Fair Town Coffee - product with local identity - Fair Trade Town: City administration and civil society pursue a common goal - Speaker is Mathias Höppner, AG Stadtkaffee / Faire Beschaffung der AGENDA 21 - 4:30 to 5:15 p.m.: Discussion and exchange.
7 pm, KaffeeSatz e. V. reading café: Fair trade buffet + get together.
Friday, 19 October
9:30 am, Bürgerzentrum Sonnenberg: "Es geht auch anders! - Responsible purchasing of clothing!" - Speaker is Dr Bettina Musiolek, "Kampagne Sachsen kauft fair".
Background: The European Week of Local Democracy is an initiative of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, which takes place annually and is aimed at the municipalities of the 47 member states of the Council of Europe. In 2012, the theme of the week, which runs until 21 October, is "Human rights - for greater cohesion in our communities!". The aim of the action week is to emphasise human rights as a key element of local democracy and to support citizens' involvement in public life.
