The exhibition uses numerous original documents, photos, posters, postcards and letters to tell the story of both galleries and bring them back to life. Changing monthly presentations introduce artists who were present in the gallery between 1973 and 1990, allowing visitors to experience a broad spectrum of artistic trends from this period.
The special presentation shows works by Gerhard Altenbourg.

Christine Kanstinger and Kengo Kuma: In conversation

An exhibition talk with Kengo Kuma and a lecture on the life and work of Frei Otto.
No one knows Frei Otto's life and work as well as his daughter and long-time collaborator Christine Kanstinger. In her lecture, she will present Frei Otto's main ideas and principles and outline individual stages of his life.
She will then enter into dialogue with Kengo Kuma and other guests on the individual themes of the exhibition and Kuma's relationship with Frei Otto, ending with the question of sustainable architecture for the 22nd century.

In this workshop you will assemble an unconventional stool. The individual parts required are already available. You will drill the holes in the wooden legs for the seat and base and then weave the seat with a climbing rope. A carrying strap makes it possible to take the stool anywhere, for example to the lake, a picnic or a concert.

Get to know the exhibition "Schneeberger Geflecht - Die Angewandte Kunst invites you" on a joint tour for blind and visually impaired people. The exhibition invites you to make, touch and try things out. The tour takes place on Sunday, 18 May at 4 pm in the art collections on Theaterplatz.
Art comes from making! Applied art connects this making with all our lives, brings beauty into our everyday lives, shapes relationships and living spaces. It has been created for 146 years in the workshops of the Schneeberg University of Applied Arts, whose holdings meet those of the Chemnitz Art Collections here. The exhibition Schneeberger Geflecht showcases the (co-)making. Students of the Schneeberg University of Applied Arts are designing a participatory workroom exhibition based on the university's workshop principle.

Prerequisites: good knowledge and skills in sewing with a sewing machine, three-dimensional imagination, patience, curiosity, interest in cycling, possession of a suitable bicycle (frame with top tube, inner minimum length 48 cm)
Cycling is not only a hit in itself, it also corresponds to the current zeitgeist in terms of a sensitive approach to the environment and climate-friendly mobility. This workshop involves participation, certainly a challenge, but also a surprise. In addition to getting to know a product made from recycled materials, the accompanying booklet provides background information on diamonds, bicycles, sport and the links between people and companies in Chemnitz. The experience of an object that is transformed into a body by assembling different parts is a special experience in this workshop. In order to achieve visual participation, the colour composition of the bag can be determined by the participants themselves using ropes and parachute silk.

Contrary to the official cultural scene in the GDR, Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz) developed into a hotspot of the alternative art scene in the early 1970s.

The exhibition Beyond Geometry. Frei Otto x Kengu Kuma explores the connections between resource-conserving architecture and innovative design. The aim of this workshop is to work in teams to build the most impressive bridge out of wooden chopsticks.
Participants will learn the basic principles of bridge building and statics while constructing functional bridge models from chopsticks in a creative and fun way. The aim is to give them an understanding of how the planning process for bridges works, what needs to be taken into account and to familiarise them with Kengu Kuma's resource-conscious and creative approach.

Beyond Geometry - Frei Otto x Kengo Kuma

Frei Otto gave fundamental impetus to architecture in the second half of the 20th century like no other. His pioneering spirit and his work in lightweight construction were a source of inspiration for numerous architects, engineers and artists worldwide. These include the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. Frei Otto is rarely associated with his birthplace of Chemnitz-Siegmar. A multi-part programme, conceived by numerous partners and consisting of events, workshops and exhibitions, aims to highlight him as an important personality in Chemnitz

Art comes from making! Applied art connects this making with all our lives, brings beauty into our everyday lives, shapes relationships and living spaces. It has been created for 146 years in the workshops of the Schneeberg University of Applied Arts, whose collections meet those of the Chemnitz Art Collections here. Students of the Schneeberg University of Applied Arts are designing a participatory workroom exhibition based on the university's workshop principle. Schneeberger Geflecht is not only the title of the exhibition, but also a call to action. Natural materials and pre- and post-consumer waste are woven, woven, sewn and spun. Stools, chairs, bags, clothes and much more will be created. The workroom invites visitors to try things out and do it themselves and actively encourages creativity and cultural participation

Celebrate the 100th anniversary of Otto Dix's monumental cycle of drawings "The War" with KLASSIK underground at a special concert between music and visual art. The etchings, created in 1923-24 and inspired by Dix's own experiences in the First World War, are impressive, almost documentary depictions of the horrors of war.
Remo Rink will show a video presentation of Dix's 50 etchings while musicians from the Gewandhaus Orchestra perform works by Kurtág and Shostakovich. Both composers experienced the trauma of warfare. The concert promises to be a moving experience that unites art and music in their emotional intensity.

Prints, oil sketches and temporary loans are also on display in the exhibition rooms.

Europe in transition: Democratic crisis and right-wing populism: In dialogue

The European Union is facing the greatest challenge since its foundation. Confronted with Vladimir Putin's war of aggression against Ukraine and the lack of US support, the unique confederation of states is currently placing itself on a self-determined and independent, yet peace-building basis. At the same time, threats from within, such as right-wing populism or violations of the rule of law by individual member states, must be countered.
Dr Thy Nguyen shows how the EU is reorganising itself in these times and countering the rise of right-wing populism. Dr Thomas Laux describes the forward-looking measures that Chemnitz and the region have developed as European Capital of Culture against this backdrop. How can culture preserve the European idea? What opportunities does the reorganisation of the EU in the 20th century offer?
