This special guided tour of the exhibition "The New City" with curator Peer Ehmke focuses on unrealised construction projects. Whether elevated roads and city tunnels, 23-storey residential towers for the York area or the Heckert area as a brutalist masterpiece - Karl-Marx-Stadt was supposed to be much more modern than "real existing socialism" made possible.
The exhibition at the Schloßberg Museum traces the intense and momentous era of Karl-Marx-Stadt, which lasted only a few decades, with a special focus on developments in urban planning and architecture.
The end of the Second World War signalled a new beginning for the heavily destroyed industrial city of Chemnitz in many respects: the GDR was founded in 1949, the federal states were dissolved in 1952 and twelve districts were created as a new administrative structure.
Chemnitz was not only given the status of district capital, but was also renamed in 1953 by decision of the state party SED. With the name of the philosopher and communist mastermind Karl Marx, the city was - intentionally or not - assigned a role as a "model socialist city".

A new theatre production for young people aged four and over is created from artistic and playful research. Arne van Dorsten and Anna Lehotská use materials, bodies and dance as well as tripods, colours and shapes to approach very different gestures and feelings, pictorial spaces and plays of colour. Together with the audience, they examine how faces are read, when and how a face is created or what happens when individual elements are quickly removed or dance out of line. And along the way, a lively story is created from shapes and arrangements! - The production, directed by Lara Kaiser and designed by Cornelius Reitmayr, will be performed on the puppet theatre stage in autumn and will also be shown on the road: at the Gunzenhauser Museum, in nurseries and primary schools.

The performances are aimed at both groups and families and can be combined with a follow-up - a short creative workshop in the museum.

In the early 1970s, Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz) became a hotspot for the alternative art scene, in contrast to the official cultural scene in the GDR. With the Galerie Oben and the Clara Mosch artists' group (1977-1982), which also ran a producers' gallery, there were two institutions in the city that attracted art lovers from all over the country with their unconventional exhibition programme, actions and events. At the same time, these venues also served as platforms for artists who were not recognised as such by the state. Here they were given their first exhibition opportunities within the framework of the unofficial scene.
The exhibition uses numerous original documents, photos, posters, postcards and letters to tell the story of both galleries and bring them back to life. Changing monthly presentations introduce artists who were present in the gallery between 1973 and 1990, allowing visitors to experience a broad spectrum of artistic trends from this period. Furthermore, the so-called "Wednesday events" at Galerie Oben will be revived in the form of artist talks, lectures, readings and film screenings, inviting visitors to enter into dialogue with the artists of the time.

What is a model of the IBA 1957 in West Berlin doing in an exhibition about the construction of Karl-Marx-Stadt? Why is it so little known that in addition to machines, vehicles and textiles, the city and district of Karl-Marx-Stadt also produced many small items that are now considered cult objects of Eastern modernism? Who was Peter Michael? And how did the photo portrait of Mum make it into the exhibition...? This guided tour of the exhibition "The New City" with curator Peer Ehmke deals with such questions and tells the story(s) behind the exhibits.

Frank Maibier is known for his subtle handling of materials and structures. He began with works on paper and developed a versatile formal language from them. Get to know some of his works on paper during a short tour of the exhibition. We will then get hands-on and learn the craft of papermaking. We will create our own individual unique pieces. After a short drying time, the papers can be picked up at the cash desk in the art collections on Theaterplatz.
