Speak and cook Japanese
Location: Chemnitz Adult Education Centre, Moritzstraße 20, 09111 Chemnitz
We will prepare a Japanese dish together, talk about the ingredients in Japanese and learn more about cooking and eating habits in the land of the rising sun.
Learning objective: Use language skills, get to know Japanese food culture in practice
Prerequisites: at least completed level A1

From HIGH to LOW printing: woodcut and etching (4 events)
Location: Chemnitz Adult Education Centre, Moritzstraße 20, 09111 Chemnitz
Have you always wanted to try out different printing techniques, design and print them yourself? You can start by cutting a personalised motif into wood. You will be shown how to create perfect prints by hand and how to print with the printing block in the press. Compared to the letterpress technique, printing the indentations that we have scratched or etched into an etching plate requires a completely different feel. You will be guided step by step through all the work processes. The course aims to provide an introduction and offer participants inspiration for further printmaking work. The main differences between artistic printing processes will become clear. If you already have experience in printmaking, you can also deepen your knowledge of just one printing technique or print a small series by prior arrangement. Please bring a sketchbook, drawing paper, drawing utensils and an apron. Material costs of 20 euros are included in the course fee. Any additional materials used will be invoiced during the course. Special tools will be provided.
Programme:
1st Friday: Development/cutting woodcut (further work possible individually until the 2nd date)
2nd Saturday: Printing the woodcuts, information on drypoint etching, plate processing until the 3rd date
3rd Friday: Working on etching: preparation for etching (further work on the plate possible individually until the 4th date), introduction to printing drypoint etching
4th Saturday: Etching and printing the etchings

"Becoming a juror is not difficult - but being a juror is... neither!" Information event on the 2018 election of lay assessors
Location: Chemnitz Adult Education Centre, Moritzstraße 20, 09111 Chemnitz,
Actively helping to shape the administration of justice - in Germany, this is possible as an honorary judge in criminal courts. We are looking for interested citizens who would like to take on this task for the new lay assessor period from 2019 to 2023. The information event will provide practical information about the requirements, conditions and basic principles. Any German citizen can become a lay judge. Anyone interested should make a note of this date.

Guided tour of the synagogue and community centre
Location: Jewish Community Centre, Stollberger Straße 28, Chemnitz
Step inside! Ms Aris, a long-standing member of the Chemnitz Jewish community and Holocaust survivor, will guide you through the modern synagogue and community centre. She provides insights into Jewish life and Jewish rituals. From the meaning of the Torah and Jewish worship to kosher food - there is no question you can't ask.
Male visitors are requested to wear a head covering.
Suitable for deaf or hearing-impaired people: sign language interpreters will be present during the course.

Cannabis as medicine - opportunities and problems
Location: Chemnitz Adult Education Centre, Moritzstraße 20, 09111 Chemnitz
It is a small revolution for Germany - the new law on the medical use of cannabis, which came into force in March 2017. Previously, medical cannabis was only available to seriously ill people with an exceptional licence from the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices - usually obtained in court. Patients had to bear the costs of the medicine themselves. Now, medical cannabis can be prescribed by doctors and the costs are to be covered by the health insurance funds. Many chronically seriously ill people are hoping that the new law will provide better help, as cannabis appears to be an effective medication for a whole range of symptoms. However, due to decades of prohibition, there has been little meaningful research on the subject, so the use of cannabis is controversial among medical practitioners, with much uncertainty and a lack of knowledge. The lecture will familiarise you with the new law, point out the opportunities and problems it contains, look at the background to its creation and describe its practical implementation to date. You will also learn what cannabis does in the body and why it offers a wide range of medical applications. The lecture is intended to counteract the widespread opinion that "weed is now available on prescription" and to encourage people to assert their rights as patients. Of course, there will also be room for questions and discussion.

"Eat like mum used to" without any animal products. Not possible? Not possible! In this course, you will cook traditional vegan dishes such as goulash, create hearty spreads and nutritious stews. Simple, uncomplicated and above all delicious.

Insights into a poor neighbourhood: Villa Itati living environment in Buenos Aires
Location: Chemnitz Adult Education Centre, Moritzstraße 20, 09111 Chemnitz
Join us on a journey to Villa Itatí, a marginal neighbourhood in Buenos Aires, built informally by poor, socially marginalised groups.
Despite the prevailing poverty and adverse living conditions, you will discover a dignified neighbourhood with a fascinating character of its own. It represents a very unique living environment, spatially and socially, created step by step in an informal self-build process, adapted to the needs of its inhabitants. The everyday struggle to make a living, the ambivalence between exclusion from society and the simultaneous development of a strong local community in the neighbourhood can be read here. This community is characterised by its own informal economy as well as by support services and social cohesion. The lecture delves into the world of this neighbourhood, presents the results of field research carried out on site with vivid images, plans and original quotations and highlights references to Europe and Germany.

Lace-making to get to know: A hobby for me?

Do you like bobbin lace and wonder whether you should give it a try? Try it out! Take the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the old/new technique of bobbin lace making.
The days of "tablecloths and the like" are long gone, even in bobbin lace making. We enjoy making modern lace, e.g. 3D jewellery, wall pictures, window pictures, Easter and Christmas decorations just as much as the classic patterns of the past. There should be a lace to suit every taste. An experienced instructor will show you everything you need to know and guide you through your first steps. You don't need any previous knowledge and materials will be provided for the duration of the course. Perhaps you too will be inspired and learn a new hobby.

Oriental cuisine: Persian cuisine
Location: Chemnitz Adult Education Centre, Moritzstraße 20, 09111 Chemnitz,
The cuisine of modern-day Iran (formerly Persia) is considered to be one of the best in the Orient. It is very varied, extremely delicious and is appreciated by gourmets all over the world. Its refined spice technique and mild method of preparation - not so spicy, fatty or garlic-heavy - sets it apart from Turkish and Arabic or Indian and Thai cuisine, for example. Famous are the kebabs (kebabs), the stews or the vast quantities of rice variations (with lamb, beef or poultry, sweet or with savoury herbs).
The food is artfully prepared, with great emphasis placed on the harmony of flavours of the ingredients. Several menus typical of the country are prepared with side dishes and salads - easy to cook at home. On two evenings, you can try one of them.
