Events at the Museum of Natural History in April

from 1 to 30 April
Special exhibition: Proboscidea
Location: Museum of Natural History, 1st floor, TIETZ, Moritzstraße 20
Admission: Visiting the special exhibition on proboscideans is free of charge. A valid admission ticket is required for the tour of the permanent and special exhibition.

The freely accessible area between the Museum of Natural History and the Neue Sächsische Galerie currently offers an insight into the evolution of proboscideans. Scientific volunteer Christopher Herrmann found an unexpectedly large number of proboscidean fossils while working in the museum's collection magazine. This gave rise to the idea of thematising the evolution of elephants using objects from our collection. You can get up close and personal with elephants, mammoths and the like in the display cases.

Wednesday, 15 April, 6.30 to 7.30 pm
When life stood still: On the trail of a mass extinction in the Antarctic - lecture by Dr Steffen Trümper, Münster
Venue: Museum Education Centre, Museum of Natural History, 1st floor, TIETZ, Moritzstraße 20
Admission: free of charge

251 million years ago, one of the greatest crises of life known to us occurred. An estimated 95 per cent of all species in the oceans and three quarters of all life on land disappeared in this mass extinction event, which marked the end of an entire era and is therefore known as the Permian-Triassic event. Scientists are feverishly searching for clues in rocks from all over the world in order to understand the causes and consequences of this event. Another archive of this mass extinction has now been found in one of the most remote places on earth: in the icy heart of East Antarctica! Penguins, glaciers and fossils - the lecture takes the audience on an exciting research trip to the traces of a prehistoric catastrophe at the end of the modern world.

The event is part of the lecture series organised by the Friends of the Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz e. V.
