Europe Weeks in the spirit of the EU's eastward enlargement

The Europe Weeks start in Chemnitz on Tuesday, 30 April. They will put Europe and the European Union in the spotlight until 31 May. In particular, the anniversary of the EU's eastward expansion will be in the spotlight. In 2004, ten countries joined the EU at the same time: Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.

On Friday, 3 May, from 12.30 p.m., one of the central events for young people from year 9 upwards will take place in the Hartmannfabrik, Fabrikstraße 11. Schools were able to register in advance for this format with interactive participation elements, which was developed with speakers from the European Parliament and the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH.
Representatives of the media are invited.

In the first part, speaker Jonas Roleder from the European Parliament's liaison office in Berlin will ask the question "Why is Europe important, why should I vote?". Afterwards, from around 1.15 pm, representatives of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH's Team Generations will give the pupils an impression of what they can expect as young people in the Capital of Culture year. The pupils will be the first to get to know the new Capital of Culture headquarters before the Hartmannfabrik opens its doors to all interested parties from 4 pm.

On Friday, 3 May at 4 pm, the "Election Forum" of the Saxon State Centre for Political Education on the European elections will take place at Luxor, Hartmannstraße 11. Saxon candidates from eight parties currently represented in the European Parliament have been invited. The aim of the election forums is to explain the positions of individual parties to citizens ahead of the European elections. The event is open to all interested parties. First-time voters in particular (voting age for the European elections: 16) are welcome. Registration is not required. Further information can be found at:

On Friday, 10 May at 4 p.m., the City of Chemnitz, the Saxon State Agency for Civic Education and the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH invite you to the panel discussion "Brückenbauer Europas. Panel discussion on 20 years of EU enlargement to the east" at Luxor, Hartmannstraße 11. Guests include Prof Günter Verheugen, the EU Commissioner responsible for EU enlargement at the time, former Czech Prime Minister Vladimír Špidla and Polish MEP and journalist Róża Thun.(see press release 283)

During the Europe Weeks, from 30 April to 24 May, the exhibition on the URBACT project "ALT/BAU: Erfolgsrezepte. Reactivating vacant buildings and flats". This was realised by the City of Chemnitz together with the StadtWohnen agency from 2018 to 2021. The exhibition can be seen during the opening hours of the town hall: Mondays to Thursdays, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Fridays, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Martin Neubert from the StadtWohnen agency will provide insights into the project at the finissage on Thursday, 23 May* at 4 pm.

From Thursday, 9 May, Europe Day, the Städtische Theater gGmbH is organising the European festival "NONSTOP EUROPA 2024!", an international theatre meeting with student and renowned productions from Poland, Germany, Austria, Romania and Switzerland.

On Wednesday, 15 May at 4 p.m., the City of Chemnitz Women's Representative, Pia Hamann, in cooperation with the Saxon State Centre for Political Education, invites interested parties to a Europe Day at the Lila Villa. A relaxed afternoon with cabaret and a lecture is planned.

From 27 May to 7 June, the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre will be devoting itself to Finland as part of the continuing Focus on Europe series. On Tuesday 28 May at 7 p.m., speaker Dr Petra Linderoos from Jyväskyla will provide insights into the Finnish education system.
