Europe Week in the city library
Literature of our neighbours - Polish writers presented
To mark Europe Week, the German-Polish Society will be presenting important authors from Polish literary history on 12 May at 6 pm in the Central Library in the TIETZ.
In the first part, the post-romantic poet Cyprian Kamil Norwids (1821 - 1883) and his work "Vade-mecum" will be presented by the writer and translator Peter Gehrisch (lives in Dresden and Lwówek Śląski).
The second part deals with the two great Łódź writers - the poet Julian Tuwim and the translator Karl Dedecius. Julian Tuwim (1894 - 1953) was a great Polish poet who wrote for both adults and children. Tuwim's work is still read in schools in his home country today.
Karl Dedecius was born in Lodz in 1921 as a German citizen. After a long period as a prisoner of war, he arrived in West Germany. He began translating Polish literature in 1959. From 1980 to 1997 he was director of the German Poland Institute in Darmstadt. The lecture will be given by Pawel Kapitula, a German scholar from Łódź.
