Dr Frieda Freise and the first maternity school in Saxony

Lecture on the life of the Chemnitz city school doctor with Jewish roots

The historian and journalist Dr Jürgen Nitsche will give a lecture on the life and work of Chemnitz city school doctor Dr Frieda Freise (1886 - 1938) on 11 November 2015 at 6 p.m. in the City Archive, Aue 16, 09112 Chemnitz. The lecture commemorates the commendable doctor who became a victim of the Nazi dictatorship. It also commemorates the Chemnitz Mothers' School, which was once the first of its kind in Saxony. Admission is free.

Paediatrician Dr Frieda Freise was particularly active in the field of school hygiene and welfare and was a major supporter of the Chemnitz Mothers' School, which was founded in 1927. The Nazi authorities forced her into retirement in 1933 due to her Jewish origins. She last lived in Prutting near Rosenheim in Upper Bavaria, where she died after the pogrom night on 28 November 1938.
