Compulsory exchange of driving licence - Appointments

As already announced in the spring, driving licences issued before 19 January 2013 must be exchanged for the new EU driving licence.

In order to avoid a rush on the driving licence authority and long waiting times, the exchange will be staggered according to a phased plan. The validity of driving licences will then be limited to 15 years.


The following table shows who must exchange their driving licence and when:

I. Driving licences issued up to and including 31 December 1998:

To shorten waiting times, citizens of Chemnitz who are affected by the mandatory exchange of driving licences can book an appointment in advance with the City of Chemnitz driving licence authority.
Appointments can be made by calling 0371 488-3366.


For the time being, appointments can only be booked for the compulsory exchange of licences.


Appointments are only available for the driving licence authority in the Bürgerhaus am Wall, Düsseldorfer Platz 1, 09111 Chemnitz.


Appointments can be booked for the following times:


Monday: 8:30 am - 11:30 am
Tuesday: 8.30 a.m. - 11.30 a.m.
Wednesday: no appointments available
Thursday: 8:30 am - 11:30 am
Friday: 8:30 am - 11:30 am
Saturday: no appointments available


The agreed appointments should be kept, as the appointment will be cancelled if you are late. If an agreed appointment is no longer required, please cancel in good time.
