City of Chemnitz participates in the federal programme for the renovation of municipal sports facilities

Project outlines for the main stadium and speed skating rink are submitted

The city of Chemnitz will submit funding applications for two projects in the federal programme for the renovation of municipal sports facilities: for the first construction phase of the reconstruction of the main stadium in the Sportforum and the 400-metre speed skating rink in the ice sports complex at Küchwaldpark.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community launched a corresponding call for projects on 31 July 2018. Local authorities with suitable projects are invited to submit project outlines to the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) by 31 August 2018. The projects are to be co-financed by the municipalities, with the federal share generally being between one and four million euros. The funding rate is up to 45 per cent; the municipalities' own contribution is therefore at least 55 per cent.

In phase 1 of the application process, a jury at the BBSR is expected to decide on the selection of projects by mid-October. The City Sports Association was involved in the fast-track procedure. The city of Chemnitz will submit the following two projects:

  • Reconstruction of the main stadium 1st BA: The plan is to renovate the tower building, which is to house the Chemnitz/Dresden Olympic training centre in the future. The spectator facilities in the south curve are to be demolished, while those in the north curve are to be remodelled. The east and west stands and the upper concourse are to be renovated.

    There are also plans to build two new functional buildings in the south curve area and to rebuild the goal judge's tower. The technical facilities are also to be modernised, including the lighting system, sound system and timekeeping technology. The city anticipates costs of around 8.96 million euros - assuming maximum funding, this leaves a contribution of around 4.93 million euros.

  • 400 metre speed skating rink: The plan is to renovate the existing speed skating rink. This includes the complete demolition of the existing track and the associated new construction of the track body. The estimated construction costs amount to around 8.67 million euros, with the city's own contribution totalling around 4.77 million euros.
